There will be a tournament mode, great... but in that mode will gear still be available but have no impact on character ability? See what I mean? If this was covered already, then I apologize.

I would still like to think that gear will still be available for tournament players in the sense of ONLY alternating their appearance / different skins, etc.

It's in the Beta right now. I'm watching REO and Dragon play, and in the match options you can turn on "competitive mode" which makes gear purely cosmetic.

So yes, you can still use your gear. You just can't use it's abilities.

For me the most important part would be to know if the "custom specials" will be available in everymode as they would be a great new take on the variation system with customizable combinations and it would be cool to see in tournaments seeing how they're limited and some take 2 slots. Stats modifying gear isn't good for tournaments unless everyone has max stats available but custom skills would add depth to tournaments.

As much as I'd like custom specials to be in competitive mode, the option to choose your own combination of specials to equip sounds like it'd be way too hard to balance. Like 2 specials could be balanced and fair on their own but put them together in one moveset and they could create broken set ups together. If custom specials are allowed we should only be allowed to pick one in all circumstances, then it'd probably be ok.

there are a lot of cool special moves that we will never get to use. i get it but tournament players and casuals will be playing a completely different game

That's the bigger part of my question, but it has been answered in regards to the gear. I'm a costume/gear person so I'll definitely have an interest in this.

The specials... I don't know enough about them or the details to really make any judgement yet.

It looked like to me that those extra moves were i2's variation system. I would hope they'd be included in tournament mode. Just no baseline stat boost.... I hope.

But there are some specials that occupy both slots, so if anything becomes problematic down the road there is a good solution if simply tweaking the moves won't work (or even if a specific combination of 2 weak moves is too powerful, buff one of them and make it occupy 2 slots so the combination doesn't exist and the move is still worth picking).

It's not like the custom moves we've seen so far are that powerful by itself (like Batman spending 2 slots so he has a viable air zoning game) and as long as those moves aren't crazy, it would be easier to balance that the 100 characters that MKX variation system presented. Also any "vanilla" special that becomes problematic could become a custom move and vice versa in future balance patches. I'd love to see that system. The stats system for geat I don't like too much because it just makes characters better, but with everyone having 2 custom slots for these optional specials, we could see something very interesting.

example... batman is able to get a jump batterang that would be amazing in a tournament build. as a tournament player i will likely NEVER play the custom build to mess up my game knowledge
