Strategy - Shinnok MB Shoulder safety on block

So as you all know the MB shoulder (not ex but the one you meter burn on block/hit) is safe, but there's a gap which some character's can use. So far I've found that Mileena (except in the corner), Scorpion, Cassie, Kano and Kung Lao get out for free. Mileena, Cassie and Lao even get a full combo. Kano and Scorpion miss out on a potential full combo punish if the Shinnok player doesn't meter burn the shoulder but it's a 100% safe punish.

I excluded meter burn moves for obvious reasons (except for nutpunch cause I wanted to try the invicibility)






I have no idea who plays Shinnok anymore or if a similar list has already been made but:

This is both the optimal and the easier way to punish the gap with Cassie


Should apply to anybody with a 6f normal or a 7f reversal. So Lao, Jax, Jacqui, Cassie, maybe Sub Zero's EX Klone (haven't tested, so not sure on that one).

Yeah the game is like 8f or something. I've had Flame Fist f1 me for a full combo punish.

This move isn't as threatening as it's made out to be.
This move reminds me of Goros' low fang, but more time to react to it. I love seeing threads like this.

well if it's truely 8f gap, then there are a lot more characters who can poke interrupt MB shoulder, however they will miss full combo opportunity if shinnok doesn't mb it

Are you playing the other variations too?
I'd rather just learn a different character but I mess with Necro a bit. I still need to play all the MU's and figure out which ones need a different character/variation

A special punish is optimal imo if someone can do it since it can be buffered and will come out on the first possible frame otherwise trying to punish an 8 frame gap in the spur of the moment with a 6 frame normal is dangerous due to this games weird block stun. The trade will be in Shinnok's favor obviously if the opponent is off by that one frame.

Yeah of course a string is optimal, but inputting reversals are easier. But if you trust your execution, go ahead. Let's just say that not having to take the guess and not to take weird block stun into account suits me.

I'm just saying, it doesn't feel like a 1f thing with Cassie and you could get it every time if you just practice. I feel like people don't put enough time in the lab into practicing punishes. If you practice the punish so that it becomes second nature, you shouldn't have a problem.

Punishing Sub Zero's B2 is tricky because it depends on the spacing, which active frame he hits you with (it can become -11 etc) and if he's behind clone or nah lol. B2 even after the patch still has weird blockstun. Shinnoks Shoulder will always be the same timing. EX or regular, MB or not MB. Same timing, same punish every time.

That's just my opinion though. Feel free to disagree, it's whatever lol.

because shoulder -> MB has a 8f gap, these characters have better options than praying, keep blocking and hoping he won't MB: (6f normals and 7f reversal should beat MB shoulder, 7f normals should trade, if he/she has a 7f d2, which does 14%, then why the hell not?)
Tanya: 7f ex teleport should win. 7f d2 wins the trade with 14% damage. 7f d1 = bad trade

Kotal: 6f d1 and d4, 7f d2

Cassie: 6f s2, 7f reversal flip
Ermac: 6f d1. Mystic has ex push which is a good option.

Mileena: 6f d1. and ROLL. As shown in the video, roll is broken. This is the 3rd situation found, where Mileena's roll can interrupt gaps that other 7f moves can't. For example she can interrupt Lao's 4*4 easily (Cassie's old 6f reversal couldn't even do it) or Cassie's B12*4 (7f reversals now trade with the last hit of the string)
Ethereal Mileena can ex fade punish the MB shoulder, but if he doesn't MB then she can't punish it. Don't bother using ex fade, just roll

Raiden: 6f F1
Scorpion: 6f d1
Shinnok: 6f d1, 7f d2
Tremor: 6f F1

Other characters should cry and ask for buffs :DOGE

still doesnt seem like a 100% thing outside of armor reversal, but you should be using mb hellsparks or amulet strike on block anyways :p
