The "gear" discussion thread

I know gear may turn out to be a bust, but I think it could be fun due to customization possibilities alone. Even if the mechanics that alter the way the character plays is stupid, the customization will be amazing.

One thing Ed Boon said that I thought was interesting was that Batman can use kryptonite gear that is more effective against the kryptonian characters but obviously not do anything vs a different type of character. I'd imagine that this isn't the only specific type of gear, what else could there be?

Altering gameplay is stupid but making cooler costumes will be great. I think this will be especially good for characters that are neglected in terms of dlc skins.

Forgive me, but I think that Gears (Customization) on a serious fighting game is a very bad Idea. Why didn't they just copy the variations Idea?. It somehow worked in MKX.

The gear would be amazing idea if it was purely cosmetic. Why it isn't is...... dissapointing to say the least.
They have a mode where you can disable the effects it has on gameplay and it will be the tournament standard. If you could STILL do the aesthetic changes without the gear effecting gameplay, that would be the best.

This has been done in fighting games since I believe as far back as Soul Calibur 2. Namco just had a mode where you could play without the gameplay changes and the gear system was largely ignored competitively (according to such players as Aris).

Heck, Ed Boon has confirmed a tournament mode exists.

As far as eschewing gear entirely? NRS wanted to do something different, that's what they do every title.

Soul Calibur has been doing this for quite a while and it seems to have worked out just fine.

A mode where this super amazing, game enhancing, move granting awesomeness that supposedly makes the game more enjoyable gets turned off but somehow leaves a game that feels whole and totally just as enjoyable for people not using it.

I'm not sure how that is going to work out. Feels a little 2+2=5 to me. This gear stuff will be interesting to watch as it shakes out no matter what.

Soul Calibur's gear doesn't change the characters moves/damage.
I could have swore that they did in certain modes. Most folks here aren't gonna give a damn what the gear does as they're gonna likely be playing a mode that makes it purely cosmetic. Their only concern will be finding cool looking gear.

Even if the gear system does flop, it's not gonna affect the game on a tournament level.

I think the bad part is the "leveled" gear. Gear itself could be very interesting for strategies and gameplay setups.

Like for example, 3 pieces that occupy the same gear slot of a character, one increases chip damage by x% the other makes the meter burn version of a move ignore enemy armor, and the other one makes you build meter 5% faster. They are all interesting, you have to pick which one will support your playstyle for that match up and won't be able to use the others, it would be like a variations system with layers of customization in that each piece won't make the character as different as variations, but there would be a variety of options to make changes that mater here and there. At least if done right.

Again, the part that I dislike is the fact that there will be better versions of the same gear as you level up, but they already said that for tournament mode there will be a close pool of gear so it will only matter online (which will make online bad IMO).

MK1 is the best MK period.
whats the tekken 6 route? Tekken's had moves tied to customization since 5.
Tekken 6 had custom things you fit your char with. It was for campaign mode. For instance jin empr greaves would add 20 power , demon gloves 40 power and add a freeze effect to enemies etc. But in vs. And online mode the passive effects were non existent.
