Question What character do you think can/cannot make top 3 at a major?

I'm just a filthy casual looking at this, but I guess what I'm getting at is if you believe only 15% of the cast is viable, why even play this game?

Because people who play to win rarely stick to a single character/variation. This discussion is about a single character being played throughout the entire tournament.

That's just his opinion. I play liu and maybe I won't make top 3 with him. But the sole point of a game is to have fun while getting better.
And to add on for liu specifically. He may not be able to make top 3, but he can get damn near it(top 8,10)

I think Scorpion can do it. PL was one match away from doing so at Combo Breaker with a half-baked Ninjutsu. (yes he also used Lao but LBSH Ninjutsu is what got him the results against notable scalps).

The problem IMO is that our representation simply isn't consistently good enough.

This is what I was refering to before.
The list gives the impression that many choices can lead you to success in tournament. But splitting in variations (which in practice are like different characters) the reality is very different.

I don't think Shinnok will ever make a top 3 the way the game is right now. Straight up if any of the Shinnok's is gonna get it done it's Imposter. Bone Shaper is too honest - Wound would have to be playing out of his mind to beat Alien, Mileena or Sonya if those characters were playing at their best. Imposter has the most dirt but unfortunately when you start fighting Sonya and Takeda it gets a little tricky.

Shinnok absolutely can. Wound just made top 5 at evo and was top 8 at Combo breaker and CEO. The character is capable of claiming a top 3 spot.

I also am inclined to believe that Quan can as well.

I would say Scorpion, LK, Shinnok and Ermac are debatable

I would split to 3 groups chars that most likely can, chars that have a chance and not as likely and chars that improbably can't.

Most likely
-Alien
-Sonya
-Mileena
-Kano
-Cage
-Takeda
-Dvorah
-Kotal

Not as likely but still can
-Shinnok
-Jax
-Liu Kang
-Scorpion
-Ermac
-Jaqcui
-Kung Jin
-Tremor
(Jason could be debatable I guess)

Chars that improbably can't
-The rest

This is not a tier list btw (for example I don't think Kotal is S tier)
If asked who could make top8 this list would be different .

Wound's path, not trying to downplay how good he is, was free aside from Foxy and King. King is still trying to figure out some stuff in the Shinnok MU and Foxy wasn't playing the best (look at every other time they meet). Wound has made top 8 at the other two and once he gets paired up with a Mileena or a Takeda he loses. There are too many other characters with better tools. Like I said, Wound would have to be playing out of his mind. It's possible I suppose but 9/10 times I don't see it.

They can only use the one character the entire tournament.

Liu, Quan, Ermac are debatable. Imo scorpion would be able to if inferno was as strong as his other two variations.

For as long as the variation system exists in nrs games there will always be that one poster that brings this up lol
