Motherboard fried, helpful advice needed!

Hey folks, first off, sorry if I posted this is the wrong area or if it is frowned upon, but I need a bit of help with pinpointing a few essentials I'm going to be needed for a new(ish) rig.

The last time I came to this forum I was greeted with an absolute ton of help and thoughtful replies, so I felt this should certainly be my first stop when it came to rebuilding, and thus, here we are now.

So, long story short, my MSI motherboard ate it. Randomly. Like they enjoy doing. This is okay with me, since the socket on it (FM2+ I believe) was limiting me on upgrading my rig anyways. I'm going to assume that my power supply, a logisys 550w should be able to transfer over to my new build, though if you feel otherwise please let me know!

Since the board is toast, I'm assuming I'm going to want to replace:

Motherboard
Processor
RAM sticks

My last rig used an APU, so I did not need a video card. I'm not opposed to a CPU/GPU this go around, but I would like to keep my total cost in the 3-400 range, cheaper if possible.

My hard drive has windows 7 and as far as I know I should be able to plug both that and my CD drive straight into my next rig, so I won't be needing those. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I will also need a case. My last one needed some custom modding to allow for the motherboard to set correctly, so I'd rather just start fresh.

If you have any suggestions please shoot away! Also, feel free to poke fun of me if I'm completely wrong about anything I listed that I need, I'm certainly more of an equipment operator rather than a techie :p

If it helps, I'm using the PC for just casual gaming, though I need it able to handle twitch streaming swimmingly.

You can't just drop in your HDD and boot Windows, that won't work. I'd plan on a clean install, after you've gotten your data off of it.

Hey, thanks for the reply!

Truth be told, I'm not attached to anything currently on the hard drive, and the only reason I want to just plug it is as is is simply because I was trying to avoid buying another HDD or Sata if possible.

Not sure what you mean by clean install, do you mean simply buying another disk of Windows 7/10/whatever?

Sorry for the questions, I'm just super budgeting at the moment and really only want to buy what I absolutely have to. If a new hard drive and disk is in my future, so be it! If that can be avoided, then great!

If you don't have anything you want to keep, then plug the drive into your new computer and do a clean install, which will erase your HDD.

If you have the Windows media to install from, and the product code (usually on a sticker attached to the case) you're all set.

His Motherboard is fried. That code was attached to it, there was a process he needed to do before being ruined to be able to use the same code on the new motherboard. Sadly, he'll have to get a new one.

To the OP, I don't think you need to get a new processor, so I would encourage you to research about it, that way you can save some money if you don't need to get a new one. Same goes for the RAM, but you would need to test them to see if they're still good, they should.

The codes only being in the MB bios didn't start until windows 8, and the op said he had 7. License wise, yes, technically he has to buy another license, but typically MS will let you activate it on the new MB if he's told he has to call. I've done this before and was honest and said my mb died and the model was discontinued, and the woman gave me the activation code.

Ah, that's amazing info! I might be able to get some extra codes myself since I got a couple pcs at home :) Thanks!
