What Variations Ended Up Being Better/Worse Than You Thought They Would Be?

Stevie Steelz

I break muthaf****s...
Shinnok as a whole is way worse than I thought he'd be. Miles, and miles, and miles worse.
I kinda knew he would be ass, lol. At first I thought it was because he got a bare bones breakdown during the kombat kast. Then the game came out. :DOGE

Killjoy McGee

[Hype Intensifies]
Ancestral Kung Jin turned out to be way worse than I thought it would be (I blame injustice) while bojutsu is hella flashy.

Hat Trick
Hat trick Lao looked intersting, but day 1 I saw it was shit. It is now day 13 and I love it the most. It will be the best variation in the game, there will be no hope for anyone else. It will become more cruel than martian, kabal, batgirl, and superman combined

So we all have Mortal Kombat X now, and I'm sure a good majority of us saw a trailer/pre-release breakdown of a specific character and either thought "Damn, that variation looks super good, I'm maining him/her in that variation..." or "That one looks useless, I'm never picking that."

In my opinion, I thought that Raiden's "Thunder God" and Erron Black's "Outlaw" variations would be the weakest out of those characters' choices... But they both seem pretty strong, and Thunder God may even be Raiden's best variation. What do you think? What variations did you think would be terrible ended up being good, and which ones you thought would be good ended up being ass?
Wait...what?
What's bad about stackable damage from sword stab bleedouts and caltrops? All you got to do is pin them down with Sand grenades or his high low game after a knockdown so they stay on the pain longer. He adds up damage fast doing that and he has a tool for just about any scenario. You just can't go nuts with him but he is definitely a character who can mess up people's day.

Don't you remember pre release when everyone said outlaw Erron Black looked like by far the worst of his variations and that it looked boring because he only got one stab move?

Chaosphere

The Free Meter Police
Ermac's Mystic Variation.

Let me summarize how it was made. And for the record I'm salt free. Just feel like adding to this thread. maybe get a few laughs.

"Hey, let us make a variation for Ermac where he plays like he does in MK9 which is a zoner. It will be his zoning variation, but let's make his major and ONLY tool for zoning/space control unsafe on block by 25 frames so everyone and their mothers can punish from mid-max range of it's hurtbox."

Man. I dunno. Mystic really forces them to get in on you where you can whiff punish with that super fast long reaching overhead. It's probably unsafe because he'd be too broke if it werent. Watch nikolass. He's got it down.

Loses to uppercuts
Each character just has one that is easier to use compared to the rest of the vars of this same chars, otherwise i don't think var X or Y is better or worse, is totally playstyle dependent.

Everyone was aiming to play Ninjutsu scorpion due the remembrance of MK9 scorpion now every single scorpion player plays Inferno, its not because it caters MK9 better, is just easier to use in comparision to hellfire, since Ninjutsu is straight forward to ranged battles.
Hellfire does less damage in every situation and the only thing it has over Inferno is one slow unblockable. Ninjutsu does even less damage than Hellfire but doesn't allow you to vortex, and all you gain in return is the ability to whif punish and punish from a little further range than normal. It's not a matter of difficulty, Inferno is almost always going to be the best one for most situations. The other two variations are to cover your bases and help out with certain match ups.

Lol. I guess I missed that commentary. I saw the poke range and the stackable bleed and thought everyone was on that tactic. Neogaf was. Guess I miss that.

Agilaz

It has begun
War God Kotal.

Pre-release I thought it would turn out a bit gimmicky, but so far it's looking to be his most solid variation out of the 3.

RNLDRGN

RONALD ROGAN
I thought Shirai Ryu Takeda looked like the JAM on the Kasts. After having played him... I don't think he's bad... just sloooow. He'd be broken if he were faster, I get that, but his overhead and lows are so slow and with so much mobility in this game, it can give him problems. Once ppl master the neutral game, I can see his footsie heavy playstyle being done well, but right now it's easier to go with someone with more speedy options. Hell Kotal Kahn feels faster than Takeda.

Kotal Kahn blood god is worse than I thought he'd be! The lack of options off some of his strings suck, you can only really hit confirm one string into a totem kombo, his sun rays take way too long on recovery! That's all variations tho...

Awesomesauce
Kano's Commando ended up a bit more disappointing for me than I initially thought.

Ermac's Master of Souls was beyond my expectations, I thought 1 of the other variations would suit me better.
I ended up maining Ermac because of it, which was never my intention when I got the game (I didn't like Ermac in MK9)
