Aftermath had a much better storyline than the main game itself imo, Sindel and Shao Kahn were amazing together. But yeah retcons are puzzling as a whole, you don't need them to write interesting stories. And the novelty of the game really comes from the tournament itself, I think it's cheesier when there's a storyline and characters just have 2 lines of dialogue then randomly fight each other.

The way I see it, the story mode should be made in the way that the character you chose to play with goes through the tournament. Kind of like sports games in a way with the 'career' mode. You can unlock gear for them, maybe then their augment system would actually be useful to level up your character to fight harder enemies. And instead of grinding towers, you'd just grind the Tournament Mode and unlock stuff for that character. They would still have classic towers of course, but not the shitty ones with wack modifiers we have in the game now where you're forced to play them to unlock gear and intros.

I feel like that would be much better than the formula they've been using for a while now.

I miss when Mortal Kombat was about the Mortal Kombat tournament.

This psuedo avengers shit is stupid. I'm tired of seeing nameless soldiers and demons fighting
Agreed. I'm still butthurt that MK11's story wasn't about Dark Raiden leading Earthrealm into battle against Outworld with Outworld declaring Mortal Kombat for self defense this time around. I really though that would happen based on the endings from MKX, but oh well. I guess I'll also have to give up on Dark Raiden ever doing anything of significance in a Mortal Kombat story mode.

That would have been light years better.

Same here
After the brilliant end of mkx, i was really looking forward to the main storyline being about dark raiden vs the new emperor liu kang and empress kitana
As soon as I saw kit and liu being useless lackeys I was disappointed

They should have waited for the reboot story until mk12 and had kronika seen at the end of mk11.
It seemed like an opportunity wasted to me.

yep, agreed .... that's why MK9 has the best story plot and script ..... and the overall environment and atmosphere is more "martial", resembling the old MK1 and MK2, that were amazing as games at their time :D

now, despite at the pure technical point of view, MKX, MK11 and Aftermath are beautifuly animated and it's incredible to see the movement and mocap action such well done, the story plot guidance , screenplay script , all of it is kinda .... dull, weak, boring and with a lot of plotholes and nonsense stupid decisions ..... in MK11 and Aftermath, MK universe and lore is acting like a TV drama soap opera , and is far from that exciting feeling we all had when playing MK9 ...... ;)

at the creative and more fanbase related point, the first 3 MK old games and MK9 are a much more mirror image of what the series is on its source origins , than the actual "mixed up" mess that MKX and MK11 bring to the table ...... and, by chance, the Kronika lore and the Titans thing in MK11, are all stuff pure copied from the Greek mithology, so, not that original if you think about, hehe :p

True, but that's because MK9 was a re-hash of MK1-3. It already had a great simple story to follow (on top of nostalgia) that they just had to flesh out some parts and make it look awesome.

MKX & MK11 are trying to move the story along from the original trilogy. Whether they succeeded is debatable. I'm way less interested in the MKX-11 story than I was MK1-3, in part because it seems to be getting way too complicated (and all the SF characters). But that's possibly because they can go more in depth due to the story modes, rather than just a few one screen explanations during an arcade attract sequence.

Otherwise do we really want them to redo the first 3 games for the 3rd time?

nope, not exactly , but, they could put way a little bit more of effort and try to be more creative and make more "goosebumps" moments in the story mode ..... I mean, today, games have potential to develop and build a strong narrative mixed with the right art direction, as good as the one the film \ movies have being done for decades, so, they need to explore better this aspect in MK in future ...... :D

kinda "hey, NRS, c'mon and put some unexpected insane suprises and jaw droppin moments for the fanbase" with some things never done before, some interesting cliffhangers, some facts that nobody was expecting, some "oh my good" stuff and try to be less predictable , hehe .... this is the advice for the next games, let's see what happens in future ! :p

Actually, the "tournament" concept involves only MK1, MK2, MKDA (some minor side plot with Li Mei) and MK9 (for obvious reasons). Soo most of the MK lore does not revolve around tournaments since like 25 years. Looking at the big picture, one can even think that tournaments were merely an excuse for the events happening behind them.

As for Mileena backstory, as much as some retcons in MK9 were kinda weird, I like better her fleshpits origin than that from the original timeline 'cause it just makes more sense to me. How come Kitana was ok with her hybrid clone around her during the whole millenia?

On the other hand, maybe Mileena was one of the reasons why Kitana turned against Shao in MK3.

There's one thing that has me wondering... I'm sure some of her intros/outros will focus on her teeth and tongue, so she will have to take off the mask. But what if you use the maskless gear? Will they alter the animations? In MKX she just took it off and didn't put it back on if you were using ravenous, but it only worked because in that game every costume had a mask designed specifically for it. So maybe she will always be without the mask in intros/outros and it will magically appear right before the fight? Wouldn't make much sense but I just fail to see how it could work otherwise.

What a day. What a lovely day.
In the OG timeline they were raised as sisters from a very young age. I believe finding out that Mileena was a Tarkatan clone (basically a Kitana backup, should she ever betray Kahn) was one of the many reasons Kitana fled Outworld.

Mileena was raised always knowing that she was the second choice and to spy on Kitana, and that developed into a deep seated hated and jealousy towards her.

My point is, Kitana must have known what Mileena is, or at least that she isn't fully Edenian. There is no way possible that she didn't see her even once without her mask in the span of 10 000 years. Nobody would buy an explanation that Sindel had ONS with a Tarkata.

You are a poor scientist, Dr. Venkman.

In the original timeline, Mileena is believed to be Kitana's twin sister, though this is revealed as false in her Mortal Kombat II non-canonical ending. There we learn she's a hybrid clone created by Shang Tsung.

There's conflicting reports as to when Mileena was introduced, however. I've generally always believed that they were raised together from infancy, but according to the wiki, Kitana was 9000 years old when her "long lost sister" was returned home.

Regardless, the purpose of Mileena's creation is different in each timeline. In the original, Shao Kahn favoured Kitana, but knew that if she discovered the truth about the conquest of Edenia and the murder of her father and subjugation of her mother, she'd rebel against him. Mileena was created by Shang Tsung at Shao's order to keep watch over Kitana in case she proved disloyal after all. If so, Mileena was to kill her and replace her, more or less.

However as mentioned Shao favoured Kitana and thus Mileena not only felt bitterness towards her "sister," but also resentment towards her "father." When she was killed by Kitana in the Outworld Tournament, Shao took her back once resurrected simply to use as the tool she was to him, he didn't actually care about her as a person. By the time of Mortal Kombat: Deception, she hated Shao, but feared him.

In the new timeline, Mileena was created as a replacement for Kitana from the get-go, as Shao was disappointed in Kitana and her lack of bloodthirstyness; he saw her as weak and not worthy to succeed him. Mileena, while immature, was loyal to him and by the time of her death 25 years later, actually seemed to love her "father." He too seemed to actually care about her, at least more than his original timeline counter part, as seen in his reaction to her death in Mortal Kombat 11.

In the original timeline, it was learning about the truth of Edenia and her father from an Earthrealmer that caused Kitana to defect and rebel against Shao. In the new timeline, it was hints of that and the discovery of Mileena being a clone that caused her to rebel.

I mean, video game logic. I wouldn’t put too much stake into rational explanations of things.

Oh god...Her fleshpits retcon was a travesty. In the original timeline she actually had some depth to her character (I would suggest you read their comic) before she became a mindless child in MK9. Kitana wasn't aware she was a clone and they both grew up believing they were twins, despite Mileena's malformation. That and the fact that Kitana was Shao Kahn's favourite, fed into her hatred even more compared to MK9 where she just woke up and was like "Hey babez we're sisters, now I hate you let's fight".

In response to your question about how it doesn't make sense for them to grow up together because Mileena had a fucked up mouth, it's a universe surrounded by sorcerers, dragons, 4-armed beasts, cryomancers, wraiths, etc. I'm sure a malformed child wouldn't be that out of the blue in a universe like that...
