PC/Steam Version - Performance, Technical and General Discussion Thread

paying for netplay
That's a big con for me against console gaming in general. My Xbox One X is strictly for offline, as I refuse to pay to access part of a game I already paid for.

In terms of performance, I've been playing a little more, usually a few matches on weekends against randoms, and I have not been having the issues you describe. I'm very curious as to what's causing them.

Yeah, I don't think it's everyone by any means. I think it was subtle enough some might have not noticed, but I think anyone having it now probably would. A number of people complained here after the patch, but I think it's far from everyone (I'm obviously complaining there too). IDK what we might all have in common. Seems like there would have to be something.

It looks a lot like what I would imagine shader or sudden GPU demand would look like. It's not totally dissimilar than what the performance issues look like on the Switch version. But it almost looks like GPU demand goes down (as near as I can tell from an Afterburner plotter line) so maybe it's hung up trying to finish some other part of the game loop for a frame. The fact that it's completely unresponsive to destressing the GPU makes it seem like it's something happening elsewhere.

Network and extra processing overhead are the main things going on when playing online that aren't happening when playing offline, so I started messing with network stuff. I actually ended up with lower pings and 1-3ms ping swings on average instead of 6ms. Hellbringer and I's ping went from around 200ms down to 178ms. Maybe it was coincidental and my ISP did some stuff. I feel like it's good but then people claim to basically have been locked out of online play entirely since aftermath dropped so maybe something changed there. Reaching to matchmaking servers and sending inputs peer-2-peer probably aren't the same though.

My CPU was pretty good when I bought it, but isn't super remarkable at this point (Ryzen 1700) It should be able to handle it and it runs at like 15% offline, but I'm not sure what the rollback processing might do. Seems unlikely I'd be chocking up on processing the rollback frames, especially given it was fine before, but it's about the only thing I haven't touched. My MoBo will take 2nd gen Ryzen CPU's so a couple hundred would give me a moderate bump there, but hard to see that helping. On the fence on doing that upgrade.

The only other thing I can think of is Denuvo checks. I would expect that to be a more universal issue though. That's about the limit of my hypothesizing powers.

New patch is live, 4GB.
For those changes, what is making up the 4gb? Also, I still see absolutely nothing for the consistent crash on startup issue that has been plaguing myself and a slew of other players for months now. Not even an acknowledgement of the issue. I get it isn't a HUGE issue as it tends to only do it once then it's fine, but it's still an issue.

They don't seem to be saying much about issues. I see lots of people complaining about having not being able to get online at all since Aftermath. The motion blur thing came and went without them mentioning it at all. I obviously had my issues I've complained about that as near as I can tell isn't being acknowledged despite at least me reporting it.

I was excited for Aftermath, and I used to be happy enough with the PC version that I got it for PC. It's been a bit bumpy ever since then.

On top of that, now I think I have to play KL for the first time in a long time. Freaking bug skins.

Been playing some randoms the past couple of days. I think the game is running a little smoother this time around. Still regularly dropping frames, just not as severely as the last patch with FPS counter only dropping 2-4 frames vs 4-8. I'm not dropping stuff near as much, though that's a tepid complement considering frequency of dropped frames is way too high to not mess with fights.

It's something I guess, and I feel like I can mostly play without it constantly interfering. Running 10-0 and one desync on the way to the Kytinn skin factory. Forfeited sets and quitalities make me feel fairly sure I can nab them all if I want. I'm really just looking to score the Skarlet and Baraka skins which will happen.

I read in the Kombat Pack 3 thread that the patch addressed (made it harder) to datamine some files that are on the PC re: leaks.

Not sure if that's true or not.

Makes me think they're about to add the real dlc files with the contents true descriptions instead of troll files/placeholders. if that makes any sence

Have a new CPU coming tomorrow on the super deep off chance it helps the game not run like ass. It's too similar to what I already have to expect anything but it's a why not, just cuz move since my computer is the only thing to do in life RN. At that point I will have replaced just about every piece of computer and networking hardware I own, all trying to the one stupid game to run like it did a few months ago or anywhere near as well as literally all my other fighting games.

I'm basically about to toss the game in the garbage at this point. So tired of trying to deal with relentless attacking when a third of what I try to do gets swallowed into some unknown place in way too many matches.

At this point I should probably just walk away given the game basically makes me want to kill myself half the time. It's just super bad for me mentally some days I should just find something else to do. Which should totally be easy during a pandemic.

If this is how it actually makes you feel, then yes, walking away is the best thing you can do for yourself.

I also don't expect the PC version to get cross play at this time, if at all.

If they do, I expect it'll be added when the game is finally "done" and no further content/patches are coming.

I feel the same way about my career. Can I just walk away from that instead?

I need help with convincing people I don't actually know what I'm doing, because they keep hiring and recommending me.

If your career actually makes you feel like you want to kill yourself, then yes, you absolutely should walk away from it. If you're using those words as an expression and actually mean your sick of your career and it's insanely frustrating, then normally I'd suggest looking at a career change or switch. Many people do switch things up around middle age.

I myself am looking to keep my hours reduced full time, and in the next three to five, leave my current career and go do something else that's actually meaningful to me.

In terms of people hiring and recommending you all the time, that does suggest you actually do know what you're doing, or at least know better than others, and perhaps that you're not giving yourself enough credit.

I'd say a complex mix of all of it.

Lack of fulfilment is huge. I'm now making intangible things which provides near zero emotional reward for effort, VS when I made things you could actually hold which never left me feeling empty for working on. For awhile I was going to an art studio on the weekends to make stuff outside of work and get it there, but that's not in play right now.

It's also just hard to produce without constant compromise, and having to build through the awkwardness of nobody fulling knowing what's happening or going to happen. Constant surprises, external pressures and all of that. The process frequently burns everyone involved out, and mental health issues are way higher in software development than most professions from what I understand. Is that the process or the people that can do the work? Like the High Fidelity of it - "Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

It being lucrative enough to overcome other life stresses makes weighing it's worth vs risks harder to do. What's worse. stressing about work or money? And without other major life drains I've been able to afford to take long breaks in between jobs compared to almost 15 or so years being paycheck to paycheck where I couldn't. That's pretty significant, and what does that end up being worth in the overall?

Anyway, topic drift and all of that.

I'm not surprised that the Steam version is not that populated. Not only did it have a rough start with its shitty launch, no they also decided to take away the ability to chat in chat rooms (lol) and KOTH.

Honestly what the fuck is up with that?

cause the pc version is a straight port. with no pc feature.

@Gooberking I certainly would not recommend living paycheque to paycheque if it can be avoided.

Are there subsidized counseling services where you are? Here in Ontario, with the pandemic, a lot of that got started up to help those struggling with the isolation of lockdown and added financial pressure from job loss, cut hours, etc.
