Dreamhack Montreal 2019 Top 8 and Breakdown

Dreamhack Montreal is finished this year, and we have results for those of you who missed out. Running straight through the Top 16, this event was possibly the most stacked we've seen this year. But somebody had to win, and everybody here had to gain a few Pro Komp points for the big finals coming up.

Y'all know the routine, hit the spoiler below if you want to know what went down. Otherwise, our next big offline event in the tour is at the Brazil Game Show in October, so lookout for that.

Top 8 going into it:

Winner's
UYU Deoxys vs. Gunshow
bc Dragon vs. Aspire Ninjakilla

Loser's
DizzyTT vs. RG KevoReborn
bc Hayatei vs. EchoFox Sonic Fox

We opened up with Deoxys and his Geras playing Gunshow's Jax. After 2 quick wins from Gunshow, Deoxys jumped over the character select screen for a possible swap. He stuck it out with Geras and earned his first win in game 3. He seemed to get the matchup down at that point, following up with another win and a game 5. That momentum kept going and Deoxys won the set 3-2 and advanced to Winner's Finals.

Next up was possibly one of the most anticipated matches of the day, Dragon vs. Ninjakilla. Playing it out with Cetrion and Liu Kang, Ninja Killa took game 1 with a flurry of fists and flames. Dragon clapped back hard in the next game, taking both rounds with near perfects. Ninjakilla returned the favor with another win game 3. In a back and forth game 4, Ninjakilla secured the final combo to take the set 3-1 and locked in his spot in Winner's Finals.

Over in Loser's was Dizzy vs Kevo. Dizzy was also playing Liu Kang, where Kevo gave us the first Jacqui of the Top 8 . Kevo took game 1 and 2, looking very strong against the U.K.'s young prodigy. Hitting us with the first 3-0 of the day, Kevo defeated Dizzy and saved his tourney life for another round.

Next match was Sonic's Jax for the first time against Hayatei's Erron Black. In two rounds that came down to a sliver of health, Sonic was able to win game 1. They looked much stronger game 2, taking another 1 in a quick game and putting Hayatei at risk of going home. Hayatei got a round in game 3, but Sonic Fox won it all with a late game krushing blow and took the set 3-0.

In the next round of Loser's we were looking at Gunshow's Jax against Kevo's Sonya. Making her look just as good as she was pre-patch, Kevo took game 1. Gunshow got a handle on things for game 2, taking the next win for himself. It was at this point I got a phone call and missed the last half of the set, but I can tell you Kevo won the whole thing 3-1.

In the Dragon vs. Sonic runback of the runback, Sonic switched back to D'vorah to deal with the Cetrion MU. After a game 1 win from Sonic, Dragon surprised everyone by pulling out Highborn Kitana. Sonic still took the next win, but it was a close game for Dragon. Dragon went to rematch, betting the rest of the set on this surprise character swap. Dragon took game 3 with a wall of fans and sais. In a game 4 straight down to the wire, Dragon took another win and made it look as if he was knocking Sonic out of the tourney. The loss forced Sonic to the character select screen where they swapped over to Cassie. We went down to the final round of the final game, with the deciding moment being a dropped Fatal Blow from Dragon: Sonic Fox wins 3-2 and moves on.

Over to Winner's Finals, Deoxys played Ninjakilla to see who was going to get that guaranteed second place. Ninja decimated Deoxys' healthbar in game 1, taking a quick first win. Game 2 was much better for Deoxys, but Ninja still took the win. Deoxys started to make a comeback in game 3, but Ninjakilla read a string with a wakeup roll and won the set 3-0 and moved on to Grand Finals.

With a pre-game staredown, Sonic faced off against Kevo, D'vorah against Sonya. Kevo played a patient game against Sonic, but Sonic won game 1. They rolled that momentum into a game 2 win, and Kevo decided to bet the rest of the set on Kung Lao. Game 3 was another win for Sonic, who took the set 3-0 and advanced to Loser's Finals.

Next up with Deoxys against Sonic, we had a Geras vs. Jax rematch. Sonic won the first game so fast that it ended by the time I grabbed that screenshot and typed these two sentences. Deoxys almost returned the favor, but Sonic survived round 2, cashed out their KBs in round 3, mercy'd, and D2'd for another win. Last game was closed out with a Fatal Blow combo, giving Sonic the win 3-0 and the match against NinjaKilla.

In the final set of the tournament, Ninjakilla's Liu Kang battled Sonic's D'vorah. The two went round for round game 1, Ninja making a big comeback in round 1 and Sonic holding it down to prevent the win. Ninja took it round 3, and he carried that game 1 win straight into a game 2. Sonic went over to Jax, which was an interesting decision as Sonic has said it's not a good MU. It was a good try, but Ninjakilla ended up being too much. Ninjakilla won 3-0 and is the Dreamhack Montreal champion.

So yeah, Sonic got 3-0'd out of Grand Finals. Ninjakilla has definitely made a statement with this win and he's looking in a good spot for the Pro Kompetition finals later this year. If he can continue this streak remains to be seen, but he doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon.

NINJAAA!!!!! Congrats my man, many people have cracked when playing sonic but not you. Good stuff, this is only the beginning.

Why are some people so evil that they dont even accept the skill and knowledge Ninjakilla possesses? Of course the characters will have impact on the outcome of the games for sure, that’s a part of the strategy but only whining about the character and ignoring the player’s capability is not a good sign of being a good person. I mean Jax is really ridiculous as well but acting like as if picking Liu Kang won the tournament is beyond me, because this guy is known for playing this character so well since the beginning, not like he has been playing liu for a short time since the patch just because liu has been maybe the best character

Lol evil? Right..

Liu Kang was always super strong from the very start. But most people need someone to put certain character in the Tier List and show them how this character needs to be played, and the hype will come.
Jax is not even close to Liu Kang.
Skill wise atleast to me SonicFox and Ninjakilla are the best players.
But it was pure s** decision from NRS to nerf Cassie and f** all the hard work SonicFox had with her.

Best event of the year... this was like a All-Star Invitational. Nearly every player was a high tier pro and we also got to see some online warriors as well. Absolutely nail biting games. Loved every moment.. Pools was basically top 32 of any other event.

Big shout out to all involved... just getting to top 16 is an achievement. Big gratz to NK for winning, but Kevo and Gunshow were my pics for best in show and Gunshow for best story. I've been following his youtube and combo vids for a long time and it was so great to see him at a major and I hope he goes to more.

lol.... there is always one isn't there that just doesn't understand the game or the players! haha.

Uhh whatever man. Sonic knows how this works. Do you remember his Alien in MKX?
