What Attracted You To Fighting Games?

We may all have different opinions about a lot of things, but I think our love for fighting games is the one thing that we can all agree one. What was the first FG you played? What made you stick to them and what made you take them seriously?

For my part, the first FG I really enjoyed was Eternal Champions that I played a lot on the Sega. I was about six at that time so I don't think I really took this game seriously, but I always had a competitive side and challenging the other kids in the neighbourhood was a ton of fun - for me at least.

But I really grew to love the genre when I first played MK2 with my babysitter. Her boyfriend brought the game over and I remember us being huddled in front of the small TV and spent hours playing. The thing that stood out the most was how different it was from other games, and of course, the fatalities. The exact moment I fell in love with the franchise was when her boyfriend taught me how to do Lui Kang's dragon fatality.

That moment I'll always remember and often we don't really see the community aspect to FGs anymore, especially if we don't have an active community around us, but I feel like this forum gives me that even if it's online. The one thing that I love most about this community is how we'll help each other out with characters and game mechanics in general because to me, that's what the FGC is about. Sure, competition is fun and it's needed, but what makes us get better is how we all help each other get to that next level.

What kind of answers do you expect? Tell me sweet cassie? Something like;

- Well i have found my own personality in them.
- I like savage things.. i need to satisfy my tyrant feelings.
- I just like Rain's color and i love Prince as an artist.
- I always enjoy to perform big combos. I just feeling that i really did something like which is really hard to do. I am a special guy now.. Proud of it.
- Whatever, i just like fighting games.. maybe graphics.
- The most important thing is story bro, because of that Mortal Kombat is the best..
- Fuck off you wicked, Street Fighter is the best, do you think MK is the best, get off they can't even handle hair making.

sorry but sometimes simple answers are the honest ones, trust me..

Fights are what make me feel alive and fighting is my favorite genre. I’ve started with MK3 when I was 3. Though I must say real fights are much easier to me. I’ve always wanted to be good at FG but I suck at them no matter how hard I try. I’ve deleted MKX 5 times and still play it because I want to be a good player but again I suck, don’t know if it’s because of my connection (wifi) or because FG are not for me. I’ve studied every term, every strategy but I’m too dumb to fight against a pro and win. I’ve got bodied by sikander the other day

Always thought they were cool. The first fighting game I played like crazy was Soul Calibur 2 because it had so much single player content for a fighter at the time. I had dabbled in old MK's, Tekken and Street Fighter but they didn't capture me like SC.

So in 2006 I was at random LAN party event and they had a Soul Calibur 3 tournament. At that point I had played that like crazy too so I entered for fun. I played pretty well and I ended up getting second (finals were really close too!). Then Street Fighter 2 HD Turbo Remix came out in 2008 and I started kicking ass online, which lead me to get SF4 in 2009. I discovered tournaments, streams, sites and the whole community at late 2009, got hooked and well here I am lol.

Fun fact: I was a huge wrestling geek for years, and then that got completely replaced by fighting games/tournament streams.

Mortal Kombat was my first fighting game. I think I took to them due to their 1v1 nature and the fact that you're in your opponent's face the entire time, with nowhere to hide. I also enjoy having a colorful cast of characters and the process of selecting a "main" to represent yourself based on both character design and play style.

I used to go to the arcade after training with my fellow kids. We liked those early ring fighters with wrestlers in them but the machine broke so we moved on to shooters. But then SF and MK came in and we got hooked.
When mk2 got released on snes there was no returning. I beat the game on very hard with every character at least ten times as practice. My parents had to lock away the controllers because at one point I refused to go to school at the age of 10. So I found creative ways to get sick.

That's awesome, nothing beats the tournament atmosphere even it's a local one. I've noticed that a lot of fighting game players were wrestling fans once, or still are. I really loved watching it as a kid, but I feel like it was more exciting back then.

Back in my home country at the arcades

Huge fan of the arcades, there were two big fighting games SF1 and MK 1 but for some reason I like MK better, probably because of the dark theme. then years later we finally got a Play station with MK Trilogy, king of fighters and a few adventure games and the rest is history

I liked watching crazy fighting game compilations. Insane comebacks/parries/combos/etc. I never wanted to play them though. I thought theyd be too complicated.

I was sharing games with a friend and he got injustice 2. It looked great so after some persuasion he got me to play. He walked me through basics and we used to play koths with randoms. I liked the practice mode and seeing improvement but eventually i left injustice when they changed the joker teeth(i struggled with joker combos as it was). And the game just wasnt as fun anymore.

Fast forward and dbfz came out. Despite my friend not getting it(i really would rather play friends than online) i put a lot of hours into it. Learned combos, had a lot of fun with t gohan, and did ok in the beginning with ranking up. Eventually had to put it down for school.

Because of how i got into fgc im always down to teach the basics. Blocking, punishing, moving, qnd improving to new people. My friend used to hype me up in koth and it was the best shit. Now i get that same feeling watching footage of people i helped in the beginning.

Hoping with mk11 i can convince my friend to get it. Being fairly fresh to fighting games im going to use mk11 to focus on being good at neutral. I think it's gonna be really hard and ill likely lose alot since i struggled so much with movement and footsies in past games. Still i think it will be fun.

Lmao, well nothing in school at that age is really worth it, to be honest, we all learn the same crap over and over. I can see how wanting to beat a game AI on very hard was more important. :p My parents use to lock away the whole console but I wasn't rebel enough to skip school.

Thing is I always play against 0% players and look the way they play but a lot of times I can’t punish things even though i know they are unsafe. I get bodied by run cancel characers. Don’t know what to do. To top it off I’m playing Buzzsaw

What I like about fighting games:

I'm a very competitive person.

Back in the day I used to play a lot of 'World of Warcraft'. I pretty much only played PVP. Battlegrounds and arenas. The little bit of PVE I did was doing quests to get to the max level and then start doing PVP. Or a couple of raids, so that I could get better equipment and perform better in PVP.
I played a lot of Counter-Strike. And I played a lot of Overwatch. Both multiplayer PVP games.

I'm not big into PVE. The problem with PVE is that you're playing against NPCs with certain patterns. Once you figure their pattern out, it becomes too easy to beat them. You just have to follow a certain set of rules and you win. In PVP that's not the case. To me it's fascinating to go up against players, who all play differently. Players, who fight back until their last bit of health is gone. And it's always fascinating to me to see new stuff, which I haven't seen before. You don't get that level of excitement from PVE games, where you just go through the motions. In PVP if you encounter someone, who is dramatically better than you, then you get destroyed and you have to hold that. You know that the opponent is simply better than you and all you can do to negate that is to git gud. It's not about learning a pattern at that point, or grinding better gear. It's about getting better and getting the better of your opponent.

Fighting games are the purest form of competition in my eyes. It's you VS the opponent. There is no team to help you out. And luckily, there is also no team to eventually hold you back. If you win, it's on you. If you lose, it's on you. If you like competition, then you're simply bound to love fighting games.

What got me into fighting games:

As I said, mostly the pure and direct form of competition fighting games provide.

The first fighting game I ever played was 'UMK3', if I remember correctly. I remember always picking Noob Saibot and just mashing buttons, until shadows came out of the character and ran at the opponent. I was super young and I had no idea what was going on, but it looked cool as hell.
The fight "fighting game" I actually played A LOT and competed against friends was 'Super Smash Bros' for the N64. If you want to call that a fighting game. I always picked Kirby and just went for it. I lost some matches and I won some matches. It was tons of fun. Funnily enough we would always play our favorite songs during the fights, which would get us hyped and pumped up and perform better. My song was always the iconic Mortal Kombat movie theme.

When I really "got" into fighting games was a good while after 'MK9' came out. And I write "got", because I didn't really play MK9, but rather just watched tournaments. Same with 'Ultimate Marvel VS Capcom 3'. I wanted to get into the game, because it featured Deadpool, Dante and Vergil - some of my favorite fictional characters. They would have been my team. But I never really did pick it up.
Then 'Injustice 1' was announced and I wanted to play it as well, but I really didn't. I prefered to watch tournaments. Same with MKX and Injustice 2.

So even after watching so many tournaments and getting a good grasp of the theory behind fighting games, I never really got into fighting games. I never development the muscle memory for them, or the fundamentals. So I still consider myself a complete beginner, after all this time.
Now with MK 11 coming out, I will ACTUALLY try to ACTIVELY get into fighting games. I'll put in the hours and the hard work to git gud at them. So I'm very much looking forward to it all.

TL-DR: I like competition and I've played almost all fighting games you can imagine. From Super Smash Bros, to Mortal Kombat, Dead or Alive, Tekken, Versus games, Soul Calibur, Injustice and others. But none of those I've played seriously to a point, where I would consider myself something more than a beginner. That is about to change with the upcoming MK 11. I'll play that game for sure and use that as a serious entry point into the genre.

The first FGs I played were SF2 Turbo and UMK3 on the SNES after I rented them from the video store when I was around 3-4 years old.
I dunno, I guess I always just kinda liked them. The concept of being in a fight with someone and trying your best to beat them. I stuck with MK because I always did prefer it and SF kinda disappeared for a while for me after the SNES days, especially during the PS2 era when the MK games then made up a great part of my playtime.

xenogorgeous

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.
- fun
- challenge
- gameplay mechanic
- stress relief time purpose (after a hard day work !) ;)

I started liking fighting games with Street Fighter and Tekken, but MK always was my loved franchise, so, all others fighitng games franchise I play only from time to time until a new MK game is released ..... MK is my priority and the fighting game franchise I love the most. Nothing against playing a little of SC6, DOA6, Injustice 2 etc to kill some time off until MK 11 finally come out, rsrsrs !! :D

Resistible

MK fan since '92
First fighting game for me was Mortal Kombat 1, use to go to the comic book store to spend my allowance on the newest DC comics, sometimes Spiderman, but when there wasn't a new comic I'd go next door and play the arcades in the laundry mat.

One day there was a new game and I was drawn to it. I found myself going there more and more to the point where I honestly think I bought Ed Boon a TV. From then on I have been a MK loyalist, I've tried other fighting games; Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, Clay Fighters, and a few others but for me they just don't measure up.
