Donatello General Discussion: "Get ready for gadgets"

So what helps to set Donny apart from the other 3? Like what helps to define his playstyle?
I don't know how actual Donnie players would describe him but to me the big unique thing he has is his trait. Particularly in the electric one, it's very hard to avoid, so in a lot of matchups he should be getting some free damage from it. And stopping the opponent's jumping for a few seconds is a big deal, especially against characters like Brainiac.

For sure his trait. It can be used to stop players from jumping too much or to mess with their spacing and go for wiff punishes. It can even make j2s ambiguously cross up on oki or shell drop cross up after certain buttons.

So what's a general plan for Donny? Seems like the general consensus of the thread early on is that he was very unsafe on trying to pressure. Is that still true?

He is not a pressure character. He can't capitalize on plus frames unless his vacuum messes with their spacing somehow. I see Donnie as a setup and spacing character. On oki make them guess between b1 or shell drop which could cross up so sorta like a 33/33/33. It's not safe though. Or i like to finish combos in vacuum and go for j2. Whiff punish with b22 then your launcher of choice.

Makes sense, thanks. Any footage of people using him successfully with some kind of game plan?

Neuby is probably the most successful donatello but i don't usually see him doing things like this. Djon is good too. Both of these players rely on shell drop mixups off f213(?) And spacing.

Here is neuby besting honeybee in wotg (super close set though)

I can eke out wins with Donnie by playing super defensively. Knowing the opponents gaps, punishing with B22, throwing out the air special when I think I can surprise them, throwing out trait any time I feel safe. Its still quite hard but I like this character.
