"Your Soul is Mine!" A Shang Tsung Retrospective

We are returned! Death to the False Emperor!
When you think of Mortal Kombat, if you're anything like me and if you're a fan of a certain vintage, one of the first things you think of isn't Mortal Kombat at all, but Enter the Dragon.

Shout out to Jim Kelly: "when it comes I won't even notice. I'll be too busy looking good"

The first Mortal Kombat can best be described as Bloodsport meets Enter the Dragon told by way of Eastern mythology and mysticism. Strange ninjas commanding fire and ice, Shaolin monks and otherworldly monsters replace the cast of Enter the Dragon, but the tournament is still held by an old man, well schooled in martial arts, on an island far from civilization.

But in Mortal Kombat, that old man is a sorcerer who steals the souls of the defeated.

Like this.

That is, of course, the one and only Shang Tsung and today I'm proud to point you towards the latest excellent Lost character retrospective from @Shad and Razor, talking about everyone's favourite sorcerer.

The boys break down Shang Tsung as a character and the inspirations behind him, his original storyline and his true backstory, what makes him tick as a character and go through his various incarnations, from the games....

GOAT design here

.....to his famous portrayal by Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa....

Indeed it was

....to his less famous portrayal by Bruce Locke in the incredibly-campy-but-fun, Mortal Kombat Conquest

This is an unfair picture but it is very funny.

On a personal note, Shang Tsung is my single favourite character in all of Mortal Kombat. I find him strangely easy to relate to (also possessing a fear of death and nothing but contempt for my fellow man), a brilliant design, concept and by far the most interesting character lore-wise. Likewise, I share the boys' utter disgust towards the way he's been treated in the last few games, from being jobbed out to Quan Chi to being essentially deleted for a pointless power boost to Sindel in the clumsiest bit of stake-raising in the history of video games.

Today in storytelling for dummies: why suddenly killing 85% of the good guys 20 minutes from the end of the story is a bad idea.

It seems fairly inescapable that, with the debut of Quan Chi in MK4, the team behind MK soured on Shang Tsung and took a shine to Baldilocks instead, with the cunning and sorcerous ways that had once been the trademarks of Shang becoming those of Quan Chi.

But hope shines eternal and with Scorpion finally getting his hands on Quan Chi and the potential destabilizing effect of Dark Raiden could it be time for Shang to return in MK11? He's certainly one of the most requested characters and, of all the original bosses of the franchise, only Shang and Onaga haven't been done justice to.

Plus, Ermac could probably do with being benched for a while.

Naked Shang costume anyone?

As always, check back to TYM daily for all the latest news on Mortal Kombat and everything NRS, especially as the clock ticks down towards E3!

Ah, this is such a cool article. I posted the NetherKast vid in the Shang Tsung section, but I requested it to be deleted now. Also found out that of course I posted it in the wrong section too. Still new here, eheheh... ^^;
But thanks for posting this! I love those guys and it is always nice to listen to their podcasts, and this Shang Tsung retrospective was definitely awesome!

Tsung was the only MK1 character not in MKX.

I would like him to be in MK11. He is so much cooler than Quan-Cheese, and he is the og boss of the entire series. Dude is awesome and I hope he comes back. Maybe he can swallow all of the souls that make up Ermac and get a big boost. Not that I want Ermac to die he is a favorite of mine, but I really didn't like the direction they took him in MKX so eh.

Man I was cool with it until you said Ermac could deal with being benched for a while. :(
I'm gonna mention and expand on this in an article soon but some characters need to sit out a game or two every now and then to build hype and feel special and right now Kenshi Ermac Reptile and Kung Lao (and arguably JCage) are primo examples

Look at how hyped everyone is for Noob and Smoke and the Cyborgs et al. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, familiarity breeds contempt.

I love Ermac but for his own sake he needs to take a break

Counterpoke with armoured DB2 at all times.

Didn't realise how right this was till I read it.

It creates the impression of including 'new' characters, without having to design new ones. The hype from the borg's in MKX is a really good example of this - They're returning characters but are justified due to being MIA for a bit (even if not for the entire game's life and added just as a late DLC to give the impression of hype due to being unexpected)

Then on the other hand you begin to grow old of constantly returning characters who aren't guaranteed (i.e not Scorpion/Sub). You could probably include any minor-slights major MK9 story character in this list. Reptile, Emac, Kenshi and the Lin Kuei extras (Sektor, Cyrax, Smoke etc). If they're characters like this who were in MK9 and also in MKX I kinda hope they take out at least one or two of them for MK11 to make room for new or REAL returning characters. Like Shang Tsung or something along those lines.

Shang Tsung is a jobber now. Fuck Quan Chi for doing what Shang Tsung was suppose to do in MK9.

Fujin and Ermac for MK 11
I don't think Ermac should take a break, he needs to be freed by kenshi and join the good guys like he did originally. A lot of things in the original timeline still happened. Ermac seems like a pawn when he's bad, just siding with OW...he's capable of so much more.

Shang ehh, since Quan is dead he may come back but what about the idea of a new sorcerer? I mean MK really only has 2, who's to say they won't create more? If Shang does come back, he should fight with Kotal to take OW's throne.

Uhh, why would you want Ermac repeat what he did in past games? And there at least 7 characters with magical powers.

Not exactly repeat but quite a few characters already winded up doing the same thing as they did in the original timeline anyway ie Scorpion killing Elder Sub and him turning into Noob, Raiden becoming Darker Raiden(just a different way) Ermac could be a good guy but not exactly the way he did in the original timeline more so what I'm saying. Maybe in this one Takeda can help him if you played the story you know what I'm talking about...

MK has a bit more than 7 with magic abilities technically but Ermac is one of the obvious ones.
