Update Mortal Kombat X turns two years old! (EDIT: Three Years Old, Charybdis can't count)

Charybdis

We are returned! Death to the False Emperor!
This Saturday gone was a very important date: it was three years to the day that Mortal Kombat X was unleashed on the world!

With millions upon millions of sales, the most successful pro scene in series history and new heights reached in terms of graphical quality and gameplay design (and new depths plumbed with guest characters, ***** Leatherface Ed?), MKX may be polarizing but it's place in the pantheon of not only the Mortal Kombat series, but all of fighting games is assured.

It is the highest selling fighting game since SFIV and sold almost three times as many copies as its cheaper contemporary, SFV, eventually becoming the best selling game of 2015. It is, overall, the third highest selling fighting game of the console era, beaten only by SFIV and Tekken 3 (not counting Smash because I'm a functioning adult human being without a plushie collection or Stockholm Syndrome towards a multi-billion dollar Japanese company). It brought the MK series heights of exposure and relevance not seen since the mid 90s with stellar production values, incredible fatalities and a meta themed around fast paced, aggressive mix up based offence.

In short, MKX is kind of a big deal in the world of fighting games, and the world of video games in general.

You could also think of it as the three year anniversary of MKX and the community as a whole. Oh sure we'd been fooling around since June of the year before and there was flirting but April was when we made it a thing.

And we forgot. NRS, we're so sorry. We know we've forgotten every other anniversary too but I spent like 90 seconds on Google Image finding this picture, so we're square right? That's how relationships work?

Remember though, love is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed. It hits hard then fades, leaving you stranded in a DLC cycle. Break the cycle dear reader. Focus on fundamentals.

According to another cursory Google search, three year anniversaries were traditionally celebrated with gifts of leather and, in more modern times, with gifts of crystal. So if you wanna go to NRS headquarters and pelt it with belts or crystal balls in celebration, more power to you (legal disclaimer: TYM bears no responsibility if your dumb ass actually does that, nor for the arrest and prison sentence which will follow).

If you thought Supergirl's plus frames jailed, you ain't seen shit yet.

For real though, happy birthday MKX, happy anniversary NRS and, even if maybe MKX didn't turn out the way we all idealised it in our heads in terms of story, meta or roster, it's a pretty phenomenal game across the board. So thanks NRS, can't wait for what comes next!

Seriously though. Cannot. *******. Wait.

As always, check back to TYM every day for the latest on Mortal Kombat, Injustice and everything NRS!

EDIT: As pointed out by @Braindead, MKX is three years old not two. Look, it's Monday.

It's still an anniversary dammit.
