Cuphead: This game is amazing

As I'm taking my TYM/Social Media "break", I've also been taking a break from video games. The toxicity in social media is definitely seen in video games to a lesser extent, but definitely apparent in online interactions. So I decided to go dark for awhile and get rid of all the negativity and toxicity.

With that said, I felt compelled to make a thread about this game. So I'm temporarily breaking my "silence" if you will, and want to talk about this game. I decided to play Cuphead, the new platforming (ish) game that came out recently and everyone has been talking about.

Now, with all that said, here's why I think Cuphead is the GoTY in my eyes.

First of all, the graphics, sounds and soundtrack are incredible. They've taken the oldschool cartoon style theme and it's godlike. The animations are also top notch. The gameplay is very fluid and responsive. If you die it has nothing to do with the games responsiveness or any problem with the games mechanics, no one to blame but yourself.

The best part about Cuphead however, for me, is the difficulty. It's a hard game, no doubt. At first I didn't understand why so many people were calling it "super super hard", but the further you get the harder the game becomes. It reminds me a lot of the older PC game "I Wanna Be The Guy". A game infamous for being one of the hardest "platforming" games there is, at least at the time when it was released. I actually mentioned that to the creator of IWBTG on twitter (again, literally redownloaded twitter just to talk about this f'n game), and he agreed but said Cuphead was a much better game overall. Like I said, the graphics and sounds are fucking amazing, they completely nailed what they were going for.

The beauty of games like this is that they aren't artificially hard. They are straight up hard games, they're specifically designed that way. It legitimately challenges you as a gamer. On the harder bosses, it's nearly impossible to go in it blind and beat it the first try. You have to die and learn from your deaths. Much like learning from your losses in fighting games. There's been a couple of bosses so far that seemed damn near impossible to beat at first. But after each death, I did a little better, adapted, and after grinding it out, eventually I beat the boss.

Honestly, the greatest gratification you can get in gaming, for me at least, is beating an incredibly hard level/boss with no outside help, just your own skill and adaptation prevailing in the end. It's why games like Dark Souls will always have a special place in my heart. These types of games don't hold your hand. There's no tips, tricks or any type of help in the game for you in Cuphead. You have nothing to rely on but yourself. When you finally beat a hard level or boss, it's a genuinely satisfying feeling. And in this era of games specifically being made for casuals, it's incredibly refreshing when you come across games that aren't afraid to be difficult!

Anyslut, I just wanted to share my experience with the game with y'all. I'm not even halfway done with it and I'm taking my time on purpose. Well, the game is hard enough that you can't really rush it anyway, but I don't want the experience to be over with. This entire post sounds extremely nerdy but I really don't care. If you love legitimately difficult games, you'll love Cuphead. I highly recommend it for everyone... 10/10 without a doubt!

This game is LIIIIIIIT!

I'm enjoying just getting bodied by whatever I'm doing.
It's crazy how much better I'm getting at it. Definitely does work on your thumb tho, constantly holding down X on my XB1 controller is taking its toll.

Did you play Outland? If you like Cuphead you might like it. Forces you to both use your mind and react accurately to what's going on.

Your mothers main.
That dragon final phase pissed me off kept accidentally shooting his fireballs that passed me when I would jump back and they would explode and kill me.

At 75% completion rn and I have 700ish deaths. Its a great game but if you don't have a background in this style of platformer there is one hell of a learning curve. That said it is worth the time and the buy.

The game play is both dynamic and feels rewarding. With 6 unique weapons you can mix match to get the right set up for a particular boss. For me the charge shot has such a satisfying feeling when you land a full charge on a moving boss. With that said this game also has some of the cleanest feeling response times I've felt in a long time. It's an odd thing to comment on, I know, but anyone who plays this game will agree.

Game play aside the art style is great with plays on Tom and Jerry and other similarly styled shows. The music is one of my few complaints. While great at first it definitely gets old but the other sounds, when playing, make this a none issue.

Overall this game is hard, it's like Punch-Out meets The Binding of Issac. But for $20 it's hard to pass up on.

9/10 would roll the dice again.

Everyone has said this one of the harder bosses. It definitely was hard at first but I got an A on it with full HP. Didn't take nearly as long to beat as the Clown/Carnival.

So far the hardest has been the Clown, that Carnival boss. Took me so long to beat that dickhead.

Also, if you're using a contoller, here's a pro tip. Remap your buttons! I have dash on R1/RB, shoot on L2/LT, weapon switch on L1/LB and jump on X/A. I had shoot on X (square for PS3 controller) and it was killing my thumb since you pretty much have to hold the damn button down the entire game. First thing I did tho was remap the dash to the RB, this game must be so much harder on default controls on a controller.

Also x2, not a huge fan of the airplane bosses (the bosses where you're in your airplane). One of them was fun, the one with the bird who shoots eggs, but not a fan of the others so far.

It's kinda funny to think if this game was made in the 90's, it wouldn't be getting nearly as much attention for its difficulty as it is today. Games used to be hard by default. Like I said, I love it when game devs aren't afraid to make games like they used to be.

I’m surprised with how popular this game is, more people on TYM don’t play it. I’ve seen a bunch of people from the FGC rave about the game, but from the NRS/TYM scene there seems to be no interest.

I have 100%’d the game on regular. Did it blind, no guides or anything, and no glitches. Most annoying boss was the Dice Man. The RNG and length of the fight is super annoying and tedious.

All in all, I love this game. My score of 10/10 remains solid. Only negative is I wish it was longer.

I actually got pretty good at this game. Welp, time to try out Expert mode!

I absolutely loved this game. Finally a nice difficult game that isn’t unfair and has spot on controls. 10/10, I’ve always loved this art style, even did some cuphead/stranger things cross over artwork: https://www.instagram.com/kevko76/?hl=en
Died a zillion times but completed the game, very satisfying, trying to get A ranks on all levels is tough but fun.
The levels that were hardest for me was that fucking baroness von bon bon and the clown :/

I have the game but still can't play it because of the vibration loop. It triggers me that they forgot to add a (turn vibration off) in the options menu, many ppl complained about that issue and the devs responded that they will add the option in the next update so am waiting for it.

What vibration loop? I haven’t had any problems with the vibration. Plus you can turn off the vibration in the XB1 settings.

I got the game on pc. As soon as you take a hit the controller start vibrating non stop, wont stop till you turn it off and on. There is a fix for it if you added the game to steam as a non-steam game then turn off vibration from steam controller settings, but i still prefer to wait for the patch instead of doing that.

I finished the 1st 5 bosses while enduring the loss after taking a single hit but then i got worn out, tried to play it with keyboard but it wasn't less of a horrible experience.

Oh I see, that sounds horrible.
