I'm Having A Character Crisis! HELP!

JBeezYBabY

Mr. Righteous
I'm really trying to be more into this game, but honestly, this is the ONLY fighting game I've came across where Match ups matter! I'm old school, right, and other fighting games we learn to figure out how to best our opponents with the best character we have. This game is NOT the case! One character can easily outclass the other. The only person I truly love is Harley Queen but nobody else really catches my eye as being second or even third in the quad. I know, I'm the positive personality n things, but dammit I LOVE TO WIN TOO!

Has anybody felt or feel the same way about this? If so, what did you do to overcome the slump? I'm on the verge of just spending most my time back to MVCi or even Tekken 7. Any type of advice, encouragement, anything would be appreciated.

I'm getting kinda lost here. Thank ya kindly for ya time.

Play Blue Beetle, he barely loses any match up but doesn't necessarily win many either. Any time I lose with Beetles it is due to how I played and not how the match up is.

I did dabble a bit with Beetle. He is quite fun to play, although kinda weak in the damage department, he does require some high execution combos. I guess I can give him a shot in my clique.

Match ups matter in every fighting game. If they didn't, we wouldn't see top tiers have a greater presence than weaker characters in every game. I don't understand what games you play that characters aren't outclassed by other characters.

I do well with Beetle and Vixen, I haven't felt the need to learn anyone beyond them and they're not top characters, just solid ones.

If you only like Harley and don't feel motivated to use anyone else, there's no point in faking it. We play these games for fun and a large portion of people don't travel offline to compete so it's not like you have to play a certain way.

I think the idea that we've exhausted our abilities and are playing to our peaks at this point is not realistic, there's many things even the best players need to work on to improve.

There are two options:

1) Pick a backup you don't really care for to handle your bad MU's.

2) Play through the bad MU's.

That's really all I can say for you. I'm a fan of being a character loyalist, but tbh it does help to have a character in the wings who can handle problems. I've played both sides of that fence, and tbh I've had the most success just grinding out the MU's I struggle in. It can suck, however I find focusing on the character you care about the most is usually most effective. If you really can't find anyone else you're interested in, I'd say just find people to really help you grind out bad MU's. Have them help you figure out how to work through them. I always have this problem with every game I play, so I feel you. There is always one character that I really click with and I stick with them.

Of course match ups matter in every fighting game, but THIS one in particular is more heavy based match-ups than any fighter. Maybe because of the zoning....i just can't put my finger on it. I guess I am clouded by a bit of frustration...

And you hit the nail right on the head. "We play these games for fun." I just don't want this game to not be fun for me anymore...so I'm trying :(

I don't really agree that MU's are so centric in this game. Some are more overhelming in this game than in others, but there are a lot of defensive tools set in place for players to utilize and work around this. There are a few I'm still trying to get used to using to be honest.

It's a very diverse game so that's why match ups matter, but there's a large slew of characters you can play with very winnable match up charts.

Characters like Cheetah do great against zoning as does Supergirl among others. People complain about zoning but forget there are multiple viable counters and solid choices to deal with it.

Can't force things to be fun for you, if it's not fun already just move on to something else. There's no need to keep at something you don't like.

He may enjoy the game, but just hate those MU's that give him trouble. I can understand how that would suck fun out of it for him. He's trying to find a way to deal with that and keep his enjoyment of the game in tact. I respect it. MK9 Mileena put me in a similar crisis.

Did you read what he said? If the game is not fun for him, he isn't enjoying the game.

My Bad matchups are like EVERY TIME I GO ONLINE lol. Its anybody who out-zones Harley. Well....at least I did beat that Supergirl in ranked. THAT made me feel good catching on them damn teleports. So i guess that's a start.

Now....i just need how to go up against Darkseid's teleport air stomps, cuz i SWEAR i be blocking up, but the game says "NOPE"!

Hate to admit it, but it's most definitely THAT! Especially since new characters that come out that really don't keep my attention for that long.

*sigh* Kinda true....I'm starting not to enjoy the game as much as I used to, but I do not want to give up on it yet. Call this my last cry of help.

I’ve played a fair amount of Darkseid players online as Harley, the good ones are rough but if he’s not covering the teleport with trait, you can usually walk back and trip guard him with b22 when he tries to j3 or stomp. His non MB lasers aren’t that great, but you do have to respect MB air laser into regular laser. Otherwise you can just walk in pretty easily on the normal lasers.

If I read correctly the game isn't fun for him because of bad MU's. Which is what I'm referring to ya feelz? It sucks playing against certain characters and just feeling like you got a guaranteed L from the jump, and not really enjoying any characters aside from your main enough to really want to try and find an alternative to deal with them. Been there, done it. It's a shitty scenario, but you're right it definitely does just come down to him finding a way to make the game enjoyable.

Matchups are a thing in every game.
If you want even grounds, play someone that has mostly 5-5 matchups.
It's not necessarily fun to do so, because 5-5 is said to be the hardest matchup.

Me every time I play online. I know that I know how to block, but I swear online be fuckin' wit me. The mixups in this game get silly, but most aren't THAT hard to block. I get hit by all them fuckers though.

Is it possible to catch him catch him with a d2 when timed right? My Harley happens to combo alot from uppercuts. I'm not really much of a full combo tech-punish-supernova badass ULTRA COMBO Harley.

RIGHT!? DA FUH! I'm like LITERALLY walking BACKWARDS as he's in the air coming from a teleport and STILL get hit with the stomp like its unblockable! THAT shit makes me mad cuz I've seen it blocked before!

I thought the stomp was a low though? I thought the whole mixup there was either air normal OH or stomp low? Correct me if I'm wrong, I don't play too many Darkseid and I straight Uppercut teleports so I don't really see it that often.

For sure. It's what I always do - it's not as optimal as, say, b22 to punish, but it's orders of magnitude easier and still gets you free damage.

Harley Quinn doesn't really have any matchups where she gets absolutely slaughtered, though I appreciate she does have her share of uphill battles - Supergirl and Superman are always the ones that spring to mind for me first in that regard. If you feel similarly I highly recommend Starfire as a secondary - Starfire and Harley complement each other quite well :)

Imma keep it ALL THE WAY LIVE, I am HORRIBLE at abbreviations lol. So I'm guessing OH = OverHead ?Question mark? If that's the case, blocking high should of prevented my ass getting stomped. A low stomp ??? Hmmmmm im not too certain. All i know was i was getting my ass kicked BUT 2nd matchup i lost by like less than 200 health...

Starfire did keep my attention at first because of her design and outzoning. She is quite difficult to open up opponents though. I can give her another shot though because Harley loves chicks with green eyes. Its her thing ;)

Yeah it means overhead, Yeah I thought the mixup was that he either hits you with an air normal that was an overhead, or he does the stomp that hits you low. Or he can do air normal into stomp, which then is OH to low. Like I said, I don't mucks with it. I uppercut lol.

Yeah, you can d2 him off a raw air teleport or a2a him with j2 if you read it. The stomp is a low though, that could be why you’re getting hit by it so much. Stomp is ridiculously negative on block though, so if you do block it you can hit him pretty hard.

Mus are in every game but this game is unique. That's why we see so much counter picking at majors. You need 2 characters that win different mus. I don't know much about Harley, but superman is one of her bad mus right? I picked up bladam for the supes mu and haven't looked back.

For counter zoning I would look at sg, starfire, bladam, and possibly raiden. The first 3 are stupid easy to pick up. Also it depends on which zoning character you face but flash has great anti zoning tools and is currently my favorite to play. So many different combos for different scenarios.
