There's no way tomorrow is a balance patch with CEO being this weekend. We're too esports now for regular NRS style patching.

So after reading through a lot of the various threads here on Brainiac, it seems like people have a pretty low opinion of him. What makes him that bad?

I WILL EAT THIS GAME
I've been online a week and I don't think I've fought a single Brainiac.

Where are all of you? I need to learn how to battle the brains.

Does it matter?

Not sure how other players feel. But I don't think he's entirely bad, but he does have some glaring weaknesses.
  • He has a lot of high normals and strings with gaps and/or awkward hitboxes.
  • His trait goes away on both hit and block.
  • He can have difficulty initiating offense against zoners.
He could probably be much better with a simple change or two.

they need to make 11 zero on block, and make 113 plus 2 on block, as well as b23. also they should give him his ion cannon, that would help him deal with zoners a bit better. as well as maybe make his trait not dissappear on block.

Brainiac is at a point where changing trait is a radical enough change to where NRS would most certainly wait for a bigger patch/more testing before implementation.

Changing trait to go away only on hit means that you could be in a blockstring with a trait charged and release it to add a large amount of defensive potential. This is not even considering the added mixup potential it may give by storing it for specific situations, so the change by itself is a significant difference in character play. Think about it as cyborg's trait, but with a faster startup and multiple casts with the sacrifice of going away on hit instead.

However, I do still think it is the change to make to bring him in line with the better characters. Trait going away on block means that at fullscreen you are almost forced to jump after releasing trait to cover any ground on any zoners, making his approach very predictable. I think making only beta bomb stay on block or increasing the amount of trait the ships use could make the change a little less drastic to see if it makes him too good.

nah, the straight drone is the one that would benefit the most from staying on block, since once the bomb drops, the beta bomb won't dissappear wheather you are hit or not.
that being said, they should both stay on block.

tho i still feel they should make a few of his strings slightly plus like the ones i mentioned before, as well as incorporate his ion cannon.

Your proposed changes are far too unrealistic to implement, especially all at one time. After speaking to many NRS testers at combo breaker, the consensus is that radical changes are not on the table this early, and for good reason. Making smaller, incremental changes, especially with a setup character, is an overall better philosophy to not over-buf one way and cause a reciprocating nerf-bat the following patch. Especially so bringing gear moves to the table, something that would almost certainly be reserved for an expansion.

I mean we have batman who has a lot more tools than Brainiac besides his trait, but his trait stays on block, and can be used defensively as well, he can't release bats only being in blockstun, but as soon as there is a gap - he can, the same design would be fair to apply to Brainiac. You let go of the trait button but it comes out only when the blockstun ends. Adding some other tools would be fine in my opinion as again there are many characters with better traits and a better set of other tools on top of that. Meanwhile Brainiac can't extend his ground starters even for a bar.

then at the very least for now make his trait stay on block, as well as 113 +2 on block, the string is a high, it shouldnt be an issue, and it doesnt launch.

It is still dumb to have to wait for a huge patch to be able to use the character at a competitive level. I mean the amount of work you have to do to get something going is ridiculous in comparison to the easy mode of playing for example Black Adam.

I would say this is close to the change i would recommend, since brainiac really has no meterless safe option outside of 113 and it sits at -4, a loss of turn when it cant lead to a combo or does any mixup, a reasonable change if we cant have a safer drill. Part of his issue to me is the huge meter dependence for safety, wakeup, and combo damage.
The batman mechanic for trait legion mentioned should let it be viable as well, since it wouldnt really give him godly defense.

maybe make b23 plus as well, and 11 should be like 0 or something, it'd allow him to stagger a bit.

11 11 11 11
F2 should be a mid
The beta should hit mid (not the bomb)
If trait is released and Brainiac is blocking it shouldnt disappear

God Confirm

We're all from Earthrealm. If not, cool pic brah.
Found this on YouTube:

Tested this myself and look at this beauty:
1. No cross up divekick and mb part:

2. Cross up divekick and no cross up mb part:

Looks freaking identical)))
wow so he gets a 50/50 off a sweep? Thats pretty awesome. Maybe other HKD too.

EDIT: does it hit or whiff if they are blocking low tho?

Here is a no cross up version, I am blocking cross up first ( getting bodied), than no cross up (blocked), and then duck blocking:
