Questions about DC from a Marvel Fanboy

So coming from only seeing Batman movies and the odd Superman one here and there, I have a very small knowledge of DC lore and characters.
Probably leaning towards Batman in Inj2 but was curious if there are any characters you guys could suggest if I name my favourite Marvel characters; maybe they share similarities?

My fav would be Spider-Man, just his comedic attitude and nimble fighting style mixed with the webs, it's awesome.
Also love Wolverine, Ms. Marvel, Magneto, and Jean "Phoenix" Gray.
Hate Superman (and Captain America too for that matter) as I find them too "perfect" and just stand for Patriotism, also very dull and boring personalities.

Anyways Top 2: Spidey (and basically all of his villains: Venom/Green Goblin/Sandman/ Electro) & Magneto, name some DC suggestions pls:

Mulder

King of Heroes
Blue Beetle ((Jamie Reyes)) and Batman Beyond are very similar to Spider-Man in terms of tone though Beyond leans more sci-fi. As for the X-Men, Doom Patrol is so similar there's allegations that X-Men is a direct copy though imo Doom Patrol gets way crazier and more out there.

ATP2014

The best mediocre Batman
Gorilla Grodd and Black Adam have some elements of Magneto to them. Believe they are superior to humans and try to mold the world in their image. Magneto definitely has more shades of gray.

PizzaMasta

Hellblazer
Yeah I'd say Flash is one of the main superheroes with the closest personality to Spidey. Funny, quirky, cocky, geeky, and pretty damn powerful. Both have powers they did not ask for and must learn to deal with the responsibilities.

I think you would enjoy Nightwing or Damien Wayne along with Batman considering the new roster. Their fighting style and quips are similar to Spider-man!
I would also think with the last three mentioned, you might enjoy the Green Lantern, Atrocitius, Sinestro, Supergirl or Cheetah!
Also if you want to learn some of the lore to catch up, search each hero on YouTube for a brief synopsis and history!

RoboCop

What is it you like about those characters? That will help. If Nightwing is in the game, you might like him a lot. That's a big "if", though.

If you like Magneto, you might end up liking Darkseid or Brainiac. But again, it depends on what you like about those other characters.

I think a tricky thing here is that there have been a lot of different representations of DC characters through the decades, mediums, and authors. So, the Green Arrow was a pretty jovial, wisecracking character in most of his appearances through comics and cartoons, but in the Arrow TV show (which is pretty good, at the least the first couple seasons I saw), he is very serious, although more of a complex character.

Joker is another character that has been the Clown Prince of Crime in some incarnations to being a raging psychopath in others.

Poison Ivy went from being a criminal to being more of an eco-terrorist.

I think DC has probably had many, many more different versions of characters, reboots of the universe, and so on than Marvel. I mean, there have been 7 different people as Green Lantern, at least.

I have mixed feelings on DC vs. Marvel. One thing is I think DC definitely has more interesting female characters in their roster. DC also had Alan Moore, Frank Miller, and Neil Gaiman, some of the best comic authors of all-time.

God Confirm

We're all from Earthrealm. If not, cool pic brah.
Supergirl/Power Girl are pretty just the DC equivalent of Captain Marvel

Dr Polaris would be the Magneto equivalent, but there has been zero chatter of him, so while anythings possible hes not super likely to be in the game

Closest to Spidey is probably Blue Beetle.

There isn't really any sort of Logan, Jean, or Norman equivalent.

I'm more of a Marvel fan than DC myself though.

They share so many writers and even plots that I think the only real comparison is personal taste.

That being said, I don't think the female comparison is that cut and dry. Scarlet Witch, Jean Grey, Storm, Elektra, Rogue, Black Widow, Spidergirl, GWENPOOL

female villians are probably definitely lacking though. Do they even exist in the marvel universe? Anti-heroes or sexy thieves seem to be as evil as it gets for the women

I can't even think of one female villain for Marvel?
Maybe Mystique but she always has her own agenda and goes between good and bad very often.

Welcome.

Spidey is unique to the Marvel franchise and nothing in DC is similar to him in the sense that his human life is his kryptonite. DC has its own storytelling, though. Step out of your comfort zone and look around. Remember: writers matter more than characters.
Even so. Heroes I can recommend with a very humane and deep meaning:
1. Martian Manhunter - Last survivor of a civilisation trying to find his place among humans. His personality is very close to Peter's in that he's driven by a massive guilt and regrets but he perseveres through it by being a genuine, hundred per cent noble soul
2. Dr. Fate - Sorcerer supreme with a dark streak. Power and responsibility with a new point of view on it. The guy's NOT Doc Strange, he's far less disciplined but at the same time he's more down to earth in his choices.
3. If you think you don't like Supes, check what John Byrne did to the character back in the 80's and 90's. You'll suddenly see him in a different light. Very human, very vulnerable in his own way.

Batman is great in small doses too, but you want to look out for the right writers because frankly, a lot of his adventures aren't all that great, and then Dark Knight happened.

I'm a fan of Magneto due to his sheer immense power, like what's more bad ass than being able to control metal? I also like Dr. Doom for similar reasons just minus the control of metal.
In saying that though, although they both have substantial power, they are both still human. If you've seen X-Men apocalypse it shows Magneto in a view that exposes his human emotions and I like that.
Also enjoy the ongoing feud with Charles Xavier.

Spider-Man is my favourite hero though due to liking basically everything about him. His personality is great & compliments his power/fighting style.
His alter-ego Peter Parker is interesting too.
All of his villains are great too and I like how he mocks them.
He also just looks fuckin awesome lol.

The other X-Men I mentioned I like because of their powers; Jean Grey being the most powerful mutant, and Wolverine just being a straight up in your face brawler with claws.

I like the sound of Martian Manhunter, will definitely check him out. Do you think he'll make it in Inj2?

Dr. Fate also sounds interesting. I'm not a huge fan of Dr. Strange though so if he's not similar to him I think I'll like him.

I'll take your word and check out that era of Superman, but I'll be going in with eyes clouded as I've just never ever liked Superman, but I will check it out.

Thanks for detailed response :)

No problem. I'm an 80's child, DC and Marvel are just a major part of my heart.
MMH making it this time around... I don't know. I hope so. Frankly, with NRS your guess is as good as mine. They are listening to the fanbase so... maybe?
Thing about J'onn J'onzz is that he's a fan favourite on one hand and a liability to story telling on the other. He is MORE. POWERFUL. THAN SUPES. Let that sink in for a moment.

Is J'onzz, Dr. Fate's alias?
Yeah when I was a kid in the 90's I grew up watching that animated Spider-Man series and without a doubt never missed an episode every morning.

I played Injustice 1 and I liked his style in that but it is common knowledge he was top of the top tiers. However I didn't know what I was doing in that game so I can't comment on that. He has so much potential as a character.

J'onnz is the Martian Manhunter, Dr. Fate is classically known as Kent Nelson.

He's one of my fav DC people.

It is better this way
I'd actually like to get more in to marvel. My favorite DC heroes in the comics are Batman, Nightwing, Superman, Hal Jordan Green Lantern, Red Robin, and Damian Robin. For villains I like Joker, Bane, Owlman, and Deathstroke the most.

My favorite marvel superhero(which admittedly my only marvel knowledge is from the MCU) is Captain America. I also like Cyclops, Iceman, and Wolverine a lot, but I'm definitely open to suggestions.

What would you guys reccomend I read?

Curious if there are any characters you guys could suggest if I name my favourite Marvel
Nearly every single major marvel character is a direct rip off from DC. There are of course exceptions, but for the most part DC did it first and did so usually by decades. There are a few things that go the other way, but only a few.

The question isn't really what characters are similar, but want ones aren't. As most of marvels roster is copy pasted.

That isn't to say they are not unique entities. Many Marvel comics have been around for decades in their own right and in that time has become something unique. Like say the US House of Cards or The Office, is a carbon copy of the original British shows, but after 100s of episodes they are going in totally original new directions, even if the "dna" of those shows are identical.

A good example of this "going somewhere knew after the initial rip off" is Deadpool and Deathstroke. Deathstroke and Deadpool are both highly skilled mercenaries and assassins. They're both morally ambiguous anti-heroes and both were experimented on by the Army which gave them extraordinary abilities. Both Deathstroke and Deadpool share disfigurements that prompt them to wear very similar costumes. Both of them have a strong healing factor and both like to use guns and explosives, but they prefer to use their dual blades, if they can, and is if that wasn't enough, Deathstroke is called Slade Wilson, while Deadpool is called Wade Wilson... BUT... Deadpool's eventual transformation into a 4th wall breaking comedic type of thing dose set them apart.

Not all of them are as apparent as you might think... take Thor.

  • He is a Godlike being
  • Has a pantheon of God Axillary characters based in Norse Mythology.
  • Has a Magic Weapon.
  • Is a "Warrior".
  • Has trouble fitting in with other people due to his cultural warlike society he has come from. Often seaming kinda lost and confused about why for example he can no throw a coffee cup on the floor and smash it when he wants a new drink (see Thor 1 Film)
Sound familiar? Yes your right.. Thor is Wonder Woman. They are basically the exact same "setup" but tweaked. Thor has the Hammer, she has the Lasso. Thor is Norse Mythology, WW is Greek. Thor is the son of Odin, WW the daughter of Zeus... you can go on and on.

In fact take a look at The Justice League and The Avengers. Capitan America is the all round nice guy and all American symbol who is the guy that always dose what is morally correct and right, Iron Man is an ultra rich philanthropist, genius that uses cool gadgets and Thor is a mythic godlike warrior wielding a magical weapon and those three make up the main leadership of the team... Yeah, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman.

That being said there are MUCH more close up and personal carbon copies that are not just thematically similar, but literally the same in any meaningful way. Thanos / Darksied. Green Arrow / Halwkeye, Batman / Moon Knight, Catwoman / Black Cat, Flash / Quicksilver, Clayface / Sandman. The Atom, Antman. Doctor Pollaris / Magneto. Doctor Fate / Doctor Strange, Timberwolf / Wolverine, Green Lanturn + Lanturn Corps / Nova + Nova Corps, Red Tornado / Vision... .. . .

I'm not even scratching the surface. I could literally list most of Marvel comics and DC did it first, and did it first by years, sometimes decades.

It dose go the other way though... Bullseye / Deadshot.. Scarlet Witch / Zantana, Namor / Aquaman are some of the limited examples going the other way.

My point is that some comic fans get all fucked in the head about this... DC Fans like to lord it over Marvel Boys for they (for the most part) did it first and Marvel Fan like to say "well they are actually different .. see this 20page document for details".. and my point is .. who gives a shit? If you like something there is no need for justification. Comics are fun and as long as they are fun to read and have awesome art then I think it is entirely irrelevant.

Anyway, back to your actual question... just go read DC comics... you are bound to like some of the characters, as you have basically been reading versions of them already.

Jynks

Also, I touched on comics with the same "dna" and comics that are just "the same" but there are also Marvel Comics that have different character histories and powers, but the comic itself is basically identical.

A great example of this is the fantastic Gwenpool.. which is just a Marvel version of Harley Quinn.

The characters are not the same, not really.. but the comic itself is basically identical. Also this is a new comic, as in Gwenpool is only a year old or so... (she started life as an alt cover only recently)

Gwenepool is a great example of how a rip off doesn't matter, as long as it is good.
