When Shinnok fell, it had been five years since Liu Kang had first defeated Goro. Much had changed since then for all beings who had taken a direct part in those events and survived.

Raiden’s ascent to the Elder Godhood was uninterrupted and he would spend the next few years in that august company while Fujin assumed his role of Protector God of Earthrealm, though his time in office was defined by peace for now. Fujin, though he cared deeply for the people of Earthrealm and their safety, was of a more melancholic, aloof character than Raiden and largely kept his distance from his mortal charges, even though he had grown close to them during the war against Shinnok.

The peace between the realms was most enjoyed by Earthrealm’s greatest warrior, Liu Kang. Though he longed for Kitana and the company of his closest friend Kung Lao and student Kai, he exulted in the peace that he had longed for and... Continue......

When you ask people about Mortal Kombat, there’s three things they’ll mention: fatalities, Sub Zero…and Scorpion. Born Hanzo Hashashi and reborn as a spectre of vengeance, living only to find redemption in the slaughter of the being who brought about his death and death of his family and clan (once he figures out who that is), clad in the traditional yellow and black of the Shirai Ryu, he wields a kunai, the power of hellfire and a relentless, incendiary hate. Shinnok was still bound to the Netherrealm, for he was blind to the ambition of Quan Chi, who secretly possessed the Amulet and was still in the process of unlocking its power. In order to escape his banishment, Shinnok would need to be explicitly invited into a realm by a being with the authority to do so.

This was facilitated by the Edenian traitor Tanya. Acting in her role as daughter to the ambassador and with the authority of her father, she invited a group of refugees from the realm of ‘Treche’ to find safe haven in Edenia. These ‘refugees’ were in fact, Quan Chi and his chief acolytes. They were brought into the presence of Queen Sindel, ostensibly for an audience to seek safe haven under her rule. Sindel, an empathetic ruler, granted their request and declared that all whom they represented were welcome in Edenia. She then used her power as the ruler of Edenia to open a portal, ostensibly to ‘Treche’ as Quan Chi used his magic to fool Sindel as to the true nature of the... Continue......

The defeat of Shao Kahn and the aftermath of the battle of Earthrealm was a time of great turmoil across the realms.

Lord Raiden returned to power as God of Thunder and Protector of Earthrealm, joined by his fellow Earthrealm Gods. Lord Fujin had always been Raiden’s closest ally and advisor throughout the millennia and, following the invasion, Raiden began to involve Fujin much more closely in his dealings with the mortal defenders of the realm.

Kung Lao was presumed dead, causing Liu Kang to meditate deeply on life, death and combat. Concluding that even he, the champion of Mortal Kombat and now established as the greatest warrior in all the realms, could not protect Earthrealm by himself forever, Liu Kang decided he must train a protégé, as well as a new generation of Shaolin warriors. Searching the world, he recruited many skilled warriors but his leading student proved to be Kai, a young American who proved a quick study and learned a great deal from Liu Kang and other great... Shao-Kahn-during-the-Earthrealm-Invasion-in-Mortal-Kombat-3-Villains-Art-Challenge-on-Game-Art-HQ.jpg
Shao Kahn quickly recovered from his defeat at the hands of Liu Kang and, although enraged at his lost opportunity to finally conquer Earthrealm and his personal defeat at the hands of the Shaolin, this rage subsided when Shang Tsung informed him of his grand plan. As cunning a schemer as he was talented a sorcerer, Tsung had always known that it was at least conceivable that Goro would fail to maintain his dominance and had conceived of the Outworld tournament as his first alternative. It was not, however, his last hope.

The sorcerer had conceived a plan he was convinced could not fail. Shang Tsung proposed the resurrection of Queen Sindel, not in Outworld, but in Earthrealm. Once his Queen and wife was returned to life, Shao Kahn would then be able to reclaim her in person and thus cross the borders between realms, merging Earthrealm and Outworld and bypassing the restrictions of Mortal Kombat. This was an ingenious plot, one of which Shao Kahn thoroughly approved. Impressed by... Continue......

Shao Kahn was not in the habit of rewarding failure. Dragged before the Emperor to account for his failure to ensure Outworld’s Victory, Shang Tsung begged for his life and presented a new plan: he pointed out to his Emperor that the implications of a Mortal Kombat tournament cannot be ignored if an invitation is accepted, even should the tournament be waged outside of the usual cycle. Furthermore, were the forces of Outworld to triumph over Earthrealm and establish a new precedent of tournaments, they could ensure that the Earthrealm forces were decimated and the line of the Great Kung Lao ended. Most importantly, however, this new tournament would buy time: time that Shang Tsung needed to bring about his ultimate plan for domination of Earthrealm.

It is unknown whether or not this tournament would have overridden the tournament on Shang Tsung’s island or circumvented the rules of the Elder Gods, but the Emperor agreed with the panicked suggestions of Shang Tsung. Moreover, he... Continue......

From a young age, two boys had grown up together in a hidden Shaolin monastery, dedicating themselves to learning and mastering the martial arts. The truth of the Realms and the reality of Mortal Kombat was slowly revealed to them, however, and they eventually departed from their Shaolin home to search out and join the secretive White Lotus Society. Upon discovering the White Lotus hidden in the mountains of China, believed to be Henan Province, they redoubled their efforts. Soon, the two realised that only one of them would be chosen as champion to represent Earthrealm. Though their friendship was never compromised, both pursued this goal with single minded determination. Continue......

At some time in the past thousand years or so, Mortal Kombat was initiated between Outworld and Earthrealm. It is unknown if it had been initiated beforehand, and it is possible that Shao Kahn has attempted to conquer Earthrealm since his conquest of Edenia, but to no conclusion. In response to the initiation of Mortal Kombat against Earthrealm, Lord Raiden formed the White Lotus Society, composed primarily of his worshippers among the Shaolin monks, to recruit and train the finest warriors from across Earthrealm to participate in the tournament across the generations. Shao Kahn’s chief lieutenant in his conquest of Earthrealm was the sorcerer, Shang Tsung.

Legends give various accounts of the history of Shang Tsung. Some say he was a former Mortal Kombat champion who cheated to attain victory and turned for aid to Shao Kahn when damned to age rapidly by the Elder Gods as punishment, others that he was an honourable champion until his defeat by the Great Kung Lao. What all sources... Continue......

The next several thousands of years were peaceful for Earthrealm but the same cannot be said of the realms elsewhere. We have no information on the histories of Seido or Chaosrealm, though we can assume they follow the usual path of their realms abiding by order and chaos respectively, but these years were a time of much change in Outworld and the Netherrealm.

This change in Outworld manifested in the inexorable conquests of Shao Kahn and the resulting amplification of his power, ably assisted by the legendary general Reiko, who is reputed to have been unbeatable on the field. It is unknown what worlds Shao Kahn conquered and merged with Outworld during this time, but it is known that one of those realms was the new Saurian homeworld of Zaterra. During this invasion, Shao Kahn perpetrated mass genocide upon the Saurians, wiping out almost the entire species. One notably exception to his barbarism was a young child, whom he raised to be his personal assassin and scout, naming him... Continue......

Well. That was a hell of a night.

The MK11 reveal at London was a once in a lifetime gig. Not only was the who’s who of the European NRS community there, like me, but so was MK11.

I’d like it formally noted that I woke up at 4am to catch my flight and was awake until 40 hours later when I got home after catching a 6am flight home the next day and putting in six hours in ‘actual’ work. I did all this with strep throat. What I’m saying is, you people better raise shrines to me. Nothing too ostentatious, I’m not @Braindead Continue......

When the realms were formed, the Elder Gods agreed that they would not interfere in the affairs of the realms and of mortals. For aeons, the realms existed with the Elder Gods seemingly indifferent to their existence. Eventually, however, one Elder God began to take increasing interest in the realms: in particular, he found himself desirous of ruling Earthrealm. This was the Elder God Shinnok.

Shinnok desired not the abstract overlordship of the Elder Gods, but the direct rule of Earthrealm, perhaps akin to the reign of Shao Kahn over Outworld. It is unknown what Shinnok’s ultimate goal was: it seems unlikely such a figure would have contented himself with the rule of one realm, and it could be that Shinnok’s long-term plan was to establish himself as the sole Elder God, ruling over all existence.

Shinnok thus began to scheme. He was aware of the prophecy of the Armageddon and the steps Argus and Delia had undertaken in their scheme. Becoming aware of the enslavement of Blaze by... Continue......

Dragons are a mysterious and powerful species, possessed of many extraordinary powers. There appears to be at least two species of dragons, as we have evidence of the most powerful of the kind being referred to as ‘great’ dragons. Though it is unknown if they exist in all realms or what commonalities species, or individuals, may share, the Gold and Red Dragons, Orin and Caro, had great power, including the ability to open portals, breathe fire and seemed functionally immortal. The seal of the Elder Gods themselves, used as the sigil of the Mortal Kombat tournament, is itself a dragon, and dragons appear in the mythology and lore of many races throughout the realms.

The most impactful ‘dragon’ in the history of the realms was no myth, however. He was the legendary Onaga, the Dragon King of Outworld who ruled long after the creation of the realms (though many thousands of years before our current time). It is unknown if Onaga himself was truly a dragon or if that was merely an... Continue......

As the community eagerly looks towards MK11 like the insatiable fanboys we all are, a lot of people are looking back on MKX, myself included. Having played a hundred or so Ranked games over the holidays, it was hard to come to the conclusion that the game will live on as a true classic of MK.

It feels so lacking. The gameplay just doesn't compare to the heavy footsies based style of MK9 but more importantly the game doesn't pop, it doesn't feel alive and vibrant the way MK2, UMK3 or MK9 do. And the roster sucks. Even having a main who suits you and a character you like, shout out Cybernetic Kano's zoning and corner combos, it just isn't fun to play nor fun to immerse yourself in.

And, happily enough, this revisiting of the latest iteration in the MK franchise is the theme of the most recent Netherkast podcasts, just in time to help you on the return to the drudgery of life after the holidays!... Continue......
