Why use strings?

I want to have a discussion on why 2D fighters should have strings. The best reason I've come up with is: hit confirming. Instead of linking several light attacks to hit confirm, you can just use the string. It's also good for pressure, because you're guaranteed multiple hits on block.

Can anyone else think of reasons to justify the use of strings in 2d fighters?
