Video/Tutorial Ice Clone Grab Freeze Setups(other than D4)

From the description:

When you grab someone into an Ice Clone from far away, they will freeze instead of double freeze. Here are a few different ways to set this up.

Originally recorded by RedRaptor10

So normally when you grab an opponent into an ice clone, you fall to the ground and the opponent goes into the double freeze animation(the one that occurs when they are frozen or puddled and you hit them with another ice ball). However, if only the first hit of the throw occurs before the opponent hits the clone, they will freeze(Sub still falls down).

The best only way to make sure the second hit of the throw doesn't happen is to start the grab from as far away as possible. The first clip shows me demonstrating the double freeze animation, wakeup attacks, and then the Grab Freeze being performed the simplest way possible: touch the opponent, take a small step back, then clone. Now walk up and grab from as far away as you can.

Obviously the "simplest method" isnt viable at all: you would never be able to perfectly space yourself and then grab the opponent, they would just back up. However the shot is here to show that it is possible to Grab freeze without clone cancelling an attack, and at midscreen.

Next up i show the two attacks that can set this up out of an unblocked attack clone cancel:
-Down 4 (Wall[W], must be touching[T])
-Down 1(W, must be close but not touching[C])

Next up are the attacks that can set this up after a blocked attack clone cancel:
-1 (Mid screen[M], C)
-Down 1 (M, T)
-2 (M, C)
-22 (M, C)
-212 (W, T)
-Forward 4 (W, T)
-Neutral Jump Punch (W, C, Whiff the Hit)
-Jump In Punch (M, Should Hit Medium to Shallow)
-Neutral Jump Kick (M, T)
-Jump In Kick (M, Should Hit Deep)

Lastly are a few more things that will get the spacing right for a grab freeze. These aren't viable but are once again showing how to get the spacing right.
-Ice Ball (W, T)
-Ice Puddle(W, T)
-1, not clone cancelled, then clone. (M, T)

oh nice... now I have another reason to use my F4 clone! I try to do this sometimes when I think they won't block low after a B121 stun. If I think they are waiting for a F4 freeze, I'll do F4 clone... now I can try to grab them into the clone and go right back into it! lol

And is anyone else digging that song?!

This definitely looks useful to know. Good stuff. Hopefully people who don't need glasses can read your captions.

how do spoiler tags work...ive got an empty one for some reason.
you only put one spoiler thing. [ s p o i l e r ] but without spaces. you only do it once

and you get this.

Also, good shit. This probably works wonders in the corner.

I think you can grab the opponent in the corner off of any blockstring clone, but you have to grab them at a specific range for some like F4 clone. D4 clone on hit is the only way to get the clone close enough so you can grab the opponent at any range. The strings where you can throw at any range are:

B1, 2, 1 Combo ender, D4 (hit), Ice Clone
D3 (hit/blocked), D4 (hit), Ice Clone
1 (blocked), D4 (hit), Ice Clone
2 (hit/blocked), D4 (hit), Ice Clone
2, 2 (hit), D4 (hit), Ice Clone
Uncharged B2 (hit), D4 (hit), Ice Clone
2, 2, 2 Combo Ender, D4 (hit), Ice Clone

But I think 2, 1, 2, clone is the best since you can still grab them into it at a specific range. I still do D4 clone every now and then but being able to grab them into the clone is rare.

I feel like this needs to be explored more. Maybe I am the only one who thinks this could become really powerful.

I don't think any of this works if the opponent is crouchblocking.

Consequently though, I've discovered that in the corner D3~Clone, Dash, Throw sets up the range perfectly and will freeze a standblocking opponent nearly every time. It's a fast setup too and hard to react to.

You can even D3~Clone, Dash, 21, Throw and it will still get them, though this isn't anywhere near as consistent.

Does seem character dependant though. Wouldn't work on Mileena for example and I didn't test anyone else.

Nothing works on Mileena...

Just an addendum to my previous post. The same setup does actually work midscreen on most characters, but the D3~Clone has to hit a standing opponent it seems. Then of course they have to not move after the clone and standblock. lol

Not the greatest setup obviously, but a decent trick to have in the toolbag.

These set ups aren't that useful at all....opponents don't just stand still and block like that when you put up an ice clone....

Only thing this really is, is kinda cool looking?

You'd be surprised cuz I've caught a lot of people in it. Some people like to jump after the d4 clone to avoid the throw, so a 2,2 check will get them and they land on the clone. Checking them with 2,2 will get them to block more after d4 clone, and after 2,2 blocked then you still have time to throw them, or sometimes I'll just walk up and not do anything and wait for their response and counter. Sometimes I dash in for D4 and if hit then you can dash in for throw, or if you can land a deep jump kick on block you get a free throw attempt. Instead of doing it after b1, 2, 1, you can also just dash in for d4 clone like Denzell does or sometimes after 222 clone knockdown if I trained them to not do a wake-up attack afterwards. Throw into clone may be hard to do, but it isn't useless.

Midscreen this makes no sense, no one is just going to stand there (at least high level players). The only place this plausible is in the corner and even then, I'm sorry just really won't work.

This is pretty much like I said, cool looking.

My bad, I thought you were talking about the corner. It does work in the corner if you get them to block, it is just difficult to do.

This is way too consistent to throw out as useless tech.

Yeah thats the one I used when I played MK9. Sometimes I would throw out D4, if it hit I would pressure. If it blocked I would clone it and maybe try a grab.

Idk about you guys but this seems really solid for reversing pressure situations. You can d3~clone dash grab/22/21/block etc to interupt some pressure and really set up some pressure of your own, or mixups, or a combo. I mean it's not perfect but when you NEED to get the life lead, this seems like it would come in handy. I mean sure you would have to make a good read, but that is what playing sub-zero is all about anyways.

I found this tech incredibly useful in the corner. I like to use it after a 2,1,2~IC (close pushback). The trick to getting them to freeze 100% of the time is to land the grab from max range.
