What's new

All-time great games, classics, "works of art"

If we are talking about games that will stand the test of time then I immediately think of replayability, so for me:
- Bomberman
- Micromachines
- NBA jam
- PES and FIFA
- Gran Turismo
- Mortal Kombat
- Others I don't remember right now.

GGA HAN

Galloping Ghost Arcade
Mega Man, Mega Man 2, Contra, Ninja Gaiden (2004 version, plus Black), Ninja Gaiden 2, Bayonetta, and most of the early Final Fantasy games are on my short list. I prefer Final Fantasy IV (2 in USA) over VI (3 USA) unlike most final fantasy fans.

GGA HAN

Galloping Ghost Arcade
Ninja Gaiden 2004 and the follow up Ninja Gaiden Black. Still the only game to successfully blend the depth and precision of a fighting game with the settings and style of an action adventure. Nothing even comes close to it IMO.

Replaying the REmake has also made me remember just how fucking amazing that game is. They just don't do survival horror like this any more.
you should try bayonetta then. It was one of the few games that captured the fighting game precision of NG along with action, all the while featuring a nice looking woman! :)

Montanx

Thats why they call this thing bloodsport, kid.
Props to the old classics, but some newer games can make the claim as well. The last of us, Uncharted 2, GTA5, the entire God of war series.

Some all timers for me would be Mega man 2, castlevania sotn, super metroid, punch out, FF6, chrono trigger. Also badland on ios.

Also im gonna say Stree fighter alpha 2 was the pinnaccle of ther series. Maybe best FG ever made. Perfect in every way and blows Usf4 out of the water by miles.

The Last of Us could possibly be one of the greatest game ever released in the last 15 years. I would also say that Beyond Good & Evil is a highly underrated classic.

Indie games are the art pieces nowadays in terms of exploring untapped themes or ideas; gameplay or presentation wise.

Among others mentioned, I have to hand it to older titles like Super Metroid and Starfox for pushing the gaming envelope. Especially at the tech constraints they were under at the time.

Searching for an alt.
Ok, is no one going to mention Planescape: Torment? An emotional and well told story if ever there was one.

Resident Evil 2 will always have a place in my heart and those hand painted backgrounds still look gorgeousand create and effectively creepy atmosphere.

Uncharted, problems though it has, really sucked me into it and was just fun on every level.

Bionic Commando is the best controls and most fun gameplay of any old school game for me, it really feels different and singular to this day.

The amount of enjoyment I got out of Mass Effect 2 can't be said enough, Mordin's loyalty mission should get some kind of award for making a human stop and think about their actual opinions on what goodness can and should be.

The music and art of Bastion are my recent favorites.

Sage Leviathan

I'm platinum mad!
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, 3 and Knuckles
PS1 Naughty Dogs flagship titles (Spyro, Crash, Jak)
Pokemon Gens I-III
Assassin's Creed 2 (and only 2)

Still standing by my decision that MK Deception is the best game in the series other than MK9.

Law Hero

There is a head on a pole behind you
Dark Cloud: Up there as contender for my favorite game of all time. Great music, fun and addicting gameplay, and incredibly unique. Legend of Zelda+Sim City is a combination you just can't go wrong with

Nier: The best soundtrack of any game ever, amazing story with tons of fantastic supplementary media adding to the characters and world, fantastic cast of characters, great new game plus content, one of the best and most daring endings in any video game, and just an all around gem. Can't praise this game enough.

Deadly Premonition: One of those weird games that's more soul over substance. The game mechanics aren't that good, but everything else excels. Great and memorable characters, intriguing story, lots of sidequests, and music ranging from bizarre to fantastic, yet always appropriate. One of those games that leaves a big hole in your heart when you complete it and move on.

Tales of Symphonia & Final Fantasy IX: Not much I can say about these that people haven't heard before, but I think both are the best in their respective legendary series. Full of fun characters, stories, and content, I can play these games forever.

Demon's Souls: This game makes a PS3 worth its purchase. Already cemented as a classic, it's not hard to see why. I believe it has the best music, levels, enemies, and atmosphere in its entire series. While the mechanics have been improved on by later iterations, it still holds up and is fun to play even now. In my opinion, it has the most Soul of the series with it's dark and gritty aesthetic and punishing gameplay surpassing that of its successors.

Honorable Mentions: Monster Rancher 2, Metroid Prime/Super Metroid, Shadow Hearts 2, Shin Megami Tensei II, God Hand, Zero Escape Series, and Kagero III.

I played the shit out of Bayonetta, loved that game. Just the right blend of NG and DMC for my liking, I will eventually grab a WiiU just to play Bayonetta 2 :)

Shadow316

You inspire no fear.
Deadly Premonition
Really? I once watched a playthrough of the Director's Cut, I thought it was really, really bad.
The voice acting wasn't that great.
The game had like, three tracks it used for the entire game, making scenes incredibly awkward, such as that annoying whistling song which played every ten minutes.
The map was huge for no reason, with tiny locations dotted around it and you drove at 20 MPH to get to them.
The story was fairly interesting, honestly.

This is just what I remember, anyway. Interested in your thoughts.

Dramatica

Forecast calls for missiles
Tribes series on PC. Truly legendary.
Contra 3: The Alien Wars on SNES, Donkey Kong Country SNES, Mario 64, OoT, Majora's Mask.
Portal 2, GTA5...

Severance: Blade of Darkness
One of the best, some say THE best, slasher ever made. Great graphics, ambience, combat system and replayability. Also a lot of modes online to keep you busy. Some say this might be the precursor to Dark Souls, although I haven't found any relation between the two or played Dark Souls series.
Here are some fun moments from the game:
There is actually an ingame feature that enables a slowmo effect when you kill an enemy.

i really don't see this game mentioned ever, but best believe its one of the greatest Western RPG's of all time. if you are a fan of mass effect this game is where they started it all, if you have me on steam you see that i'm still playing this game all the time , its that good.
