Evidence for Onaga in MKX and final boss speculation

I mentioned this a while ago, but lately I'm becoming more and more convinced. I think the skull in Quan Chi's chest is Onaga. This leads me to believe that Onaga will be returning in MKX, will play a big role in the story after being resurrected by Quan Chi and may be the final boss.

Evidence for this? Firstly, the skull is too big to be any human. Also, why would Quan have any old human skull on his chest? Surely he would only have one which he is able to utilise for his benefit. This would therefore make sense for it to be Onaga's skull and he has found a way to utilise Onaga's powers from his bones. Evidence of this can be seen in his win pose where he clearly activates the skull, raising an army of the dead, reminiscent of Onaga's army...

Onaga's army from deception

Also, anyone who has been keeping up with the comics, knows that the Kamidogu play a considerable role leading up to MKX. It has been hinted at that these Kamidogu are not the same as those from deception, but exactly how remains to be seen.

Would like to hear other people's speculation on Quan's skull and the Kamidogu.

I heard i think it was one of the character designers on NRS said that: What if we put a skull in his chest? and they said it might look bad, but when they actually did it, they thought it looked badass so they stuck with it, i don't think it has a meaning really, but could be!

But that skull has powers, you can see it in his win pose.

No. MKX takes place 5, 10, 15 and 25 years, non-linear.
Yes yes I know, but when it comes to final boss it usually has significance to where the story ends. E.g. in deception it's Onaga who is only powerful after Shujinko gathers all the Kamidogu in the story mode. The beginning of the story mode tends to not have much significance to the final boss. So they're not going to have a final boss that's only relevant in the 5, 10, 15 year parts of the story.

No. Shit.

But pretending like just because it goes 25 doesn't mean the Netherrealm war doesn't play an important part...especially since it has been mentioned

On the one hand, i'm willing to just write it off as "some concept artist through a giant fucking skull would look good and went with it". Skulls have always been a part of quans "theme"(mainly because of his fireball) and so it would normally be a stretch to say it's anything else.

That said, the fact that the comics mention the kamidogo, and the game is in some ways likely to be a spiritual successor to MK4 and the DA series helps.

The former because seriously the Kamidogo were the DUMBEST plot device ever and I can't imagine ever deciding to bring that back unless for some reason you wanted to bring back someone or something tied to it(or maybe they just ingested marginally sub lethal amounts of alcohol).

The latter because we already know they ended the last game on a nice setup to MK4, and this entire timeline is sorta "mk what if", with everything they did in MK9 NOT WORKING. The whole point was that everything they did was basically still leading to the same outcome, so the big change was finally letting shao khan get rocked and i'm guessing that means they want to diverge heavily from the previous plots. Still, I expect it to start somewhat similar to 4 and DA(and there's already parallels. Shinnok+quan and Liu being dead), but then obviously veer off heavily. Either way just ignoring onaga and the entire DA series doesn't seem like something they'd do, and they've already got the MK4 shoutout, so they'll probably just go all in.

And I'm not pretending that those events aren't important, but he was saying "boss will be Shinnok because of MK9 ending" and I'm saying that by the time we get to MKX ending (and therefore the likely final boss) we will be so far past the MK9 ending and entrance of Shinnok that it is unlikely to be him, but will instead be someone who came about due to his and Quan Chi's actions i.e. Onaga.
