The bad boy scout
I feel like the debate of the best seen is very hugely based on the success of Injustice instead of the NRS games as a whole. As for Injustice it's difficult to argue that both The Break and GGA are top notch when it comes to their scenes. But has it been SOO long that we have long forgotten VSM from back in the MK9 days? If so then let's go back onto memory lane back when VSM vs Midwest (containing 3 of some of the best GGA has to offer) plus 2 very well known and good players of the MK9 scene. It's difficult to argue that VSM was pretty much THE SCENE back in the MK9 days.

Also something that I have noticed while watching streams of MK9 back in the day and Injustice present day. There is a serious lack of exposure to other scenes. What I mean is the NRS community is SOOO small why not plug a stream from another region so they can watch more Injustice or MK9? Like back in the day VSM could have plugged for GGA or what not. A smaller scene like ours in the NW Northwest. We have locals once a month Slugfest. Even get's posted on front page and no one really notices. I'm not expecting people to come flocking in because I realize we haven't really done much for majors. What I am saying is that there is a serious lack of exposure to our games. Communication is key. Without working together I have a feel MKX is simply going to fall into the same issues both MK9 and Injustice did. They play out there time for a year or so and people ask "When's the next NRS game?"

When it comes to the variation lock. Why on earth is this is in question? MK9 already dealt with this issue. Have we all forgotten about HUMAN Cyrax and HUMAN Sektor? The different hitboxes? Cyrax was well known to counter Kabals instant air gas blasts as the teleport could go underneath them in human form while robotic form would get clipped. It was established back then it was character lock as the matchup would have to be played differently otherwise. Also let's not forget different combos for Human and Robot Cyrax. Different RESETS!!! The variations will have similar issues. Variations are just like picking another character.

One thing that always made me confused about Injustice and MK9 stage selection. MK9 had a built in random stage select but the community let the loser choose. Obviously this was a good thing because of stage size or laggy stages or non. Injustice has no built in random button and instead trades it for a 50/50 stage select. This is good for either player as they get their interactables for their respective characters. So why can't MKX simply have a random button? Also instead of letting loser pick why can't we just pick the random button EVERY TIME!?!? To me this makes the most sense as it gives neither player the advantage of stages (right now it SEEMS that interactables are the same for all characters)

Also a request for future episodes. When you post the episodes would it be cool to add timestamps about your topics? This way if you want to listen over a specific topic it makes it a bit easier if you missed something in your future podcasts. Keep up the good work guys. A good listen.

I think everyone wants VSM back. Having strong vibrant scenes all over helps everyone. It helps us all level up faster and makes for far more entertaining tournaments. Before MKX drops we should organize stream schedules to maximize viewerships.

Like this scene streams monday, this other scene streams tuesday, etc. etc... Let's get 7 days a week of MKX streams!

I'd much rather see that than see people play musical character chairs. Allowing re-pick of the variation would help reward people for sticking with their main.

Do we really just want to see a repeat of "you picked Cage -- I'll pick Kenshi?"

You'd have to be ballsier to counterpick knowing it still might not give you the easiest possible path. And I'm all for ballsier picks :D
Like I said on the podcast (and shame on you if you haven't listened!), to stay on the safe side, we should start with variation lock, and then, as the game develops and we understand more about its balance, we can change the rules accordingly.

Haven't listened all the way yet, but I award this podcast 10 points for having mp3 version and nice production values.

Props from the podcast guru.
I was thinking the same, nice to have a podcast that is of decent audio quality :)

Really enjoying the show guys, hope you carry on with it. My vote was for Brady, he is always entertaining.

Dude, I've always liked you, so I don't want this to turn into a whole back-and-forth discussion over nothing. But, with all due respect, it's a podcast which has someone with the GGA handle before their names (ie a GGA member), a known GGA supporter, and 3 friends of said GGA member, what the fuck did you expect?

Also, how can we talk about best locals without bringing up GGA? Yes, we all mentioned them, but all we did was A) say their stream very entertaining and B) the level of gameplay is awesome. That's literally what everyone said. We also said they're passionate about the game which is a fact. What's your problem with any of that? Hell, me, Fly, and Homelee explicitly mentioned THE BREAK as the most dominant local, and Hippo said WNF is the most dominant. So we didn't even call GGA the best. Just that they're entertaining and good at the game. If that's what constitutes dick riding, then we've all ridden plenty of dicks, yourself included, because your East Cost bias in general is ridiculous.
Dude WTF I never mentioned the podcast I referred to a specific poster. Second of all I have some ridiculous east coast bias? Let's see, I really like the EGP guys have hung out and roomed with tyrant multiple times. Have been to GGA multiple times. Ran an evo event with PIG and hung out with him and m2Dave at EVO a lot of the time. I'm friends with the Candada players AND European players that i've met. Because I think REO is the best MK player makes me some kind of dick rider? It's not just my opinion and I always say that REO and PL are #1 and #2 in MK without a doubt those are the two best resumes and if someone wants to say PL has the best that I can see it and wouldn't really argue that much.

Now lets get to the actual facts of the matter and someone that most people in this very thread are not going to like...

Ever since Injustice has come out there is some kind of weird concerted effort to discredit the NE players and accomplishments. It's very obvious and KDZ who won EVO, TFC and Winterbrawl is treated like some fucking scrub. Yeah it's true we don't have much of a scene here because majority of the players here don't like injustice much and don't care. So yeah best overall scene as far as participation and actively playing the game is most definitely GGA. Those guys are great.

But both EVO champions are from the North East. For god sake Sonic Fox is from the same town I grew up in, in NJ. He attends all our tournaments here and is just a part of the east coast scene as anyone else.

Also lets take another one of our top players that people treat like he's some scrub. That's CD Jr. Just because he doesn't like injustice enough to dedicate the time into it that others have doesn't mean he's some shitty player. Dude is the unquestionable best KI player on the planet right now and was top 5 MK player going by resume. But because he's not part of the "injustice" skype club and others here on the EC aren't either besides revolver, he and others are dismissed as "lesser" players.

I don't understand why there has to be so much effort to do this. This past EVO myself, Pig and others worked together to bring a tournament for ALL the scenes and people seemed to really enjoy it, I really did. But that was for MK. Maybe it's the injustice community that is this way, I don't know but I hope this doesn't remain for MKX. I Myself will be attending KIT just to literally hang out with other people besides the east coast guys because hardly anyone comes to our tournaments outside of the EC anymore and it's bullshit. We have 2 evo champs here and some great players and personalities and every single event we have had lately has been fantastic. Even PL is coming to our events now and he didn't used to.

Indecisive

We'll burn you all—that is your fate!
Yay! i got mentioned. My Only complaint is can you adjust peoples mics. Sometimes people are too low while other times people are too loud. And its not them being too loud or soft its the mic volume im pretty sure. Its troublesome having to adjust the volume up and down every time someone different talks. But keep going and such.

I had a good laugh. Pray that me and other VSM players like REO riu48 soup my brothers etc dont like MKX cause it will not be fun for other scenes.
Jr, no preemptive option selects, please. Don't give us that "if we like the game" bullshit. Just come in here, and say you will body everyone regardless. Trust me, I think even other scenes would like to see you guys come back strong. Give me that over unbearable twitter rants any day of the week.

No option select but I'll say this if I don't like the game I won't play it from the beginning and won't bash it. Like I said before I can't be good at games I don't love plain and simple I have shown proof many times lol.

OK, to clarify the apparent misunderstanding, you came into a thread about the podcast and randomly blew up the GGA "dickriding" so obviously we're going to assume you're talking about the podcast since you initially didn't quote any particular post. Anyway, now that this has been cleared, let's move on.

Second of all I have some ridiculous east coast bias? Let's see, I really like the EGP guys have hung out and roomed with tyrant multiple times. Have been to GGA multiple times. Dude hold on. I never said you're only friends with EC guys. Being biased doesn't mean you're hostile to other scenes. You just pump up the east coast a lot. Most of us think REO is the best MK player by the way, so no that's not it.

Ever since Injustice has come out there is some kind of weird concerted effort to discredit the NE players and accomplishments. It's very obvious and KDZ who won EVO, TFC and Winterbrawl is treated like some fucking scrub. OK this has actually been addressed on the podcast. Not sure you gave it a listen but try to do so when you have some time on your hands. Nobody thinks KDZ is a scrub by the way, but since the patch he's only done well at a couple of majors. Still, he's an EVO champion and that can't be disputed. Keep in mind, I explicitly mentioned the break as a very dominant scene on the podcast, as did HomeLee and LOTF. I can't be responsible for what the rest of the community thinks but on the podcast, the NE got their dues.

Also lets take another one of our top players that people treat like he's some scrub. That's CD Jr. Just because he doesn't like injustice enough to dedicate the time into it that others have doesn't mean he's some shitty player. But because he's not part of the "injustice" skype club and others here on the EC aren't either besides revolver, he and others are dismissed as "lesser" players.
Dude, nobody calls CD Jr a bad player. The guy is an EVO champion in one game and a finalist in another. He's pretty much recognized as a top 5 MK9 player of all time, and the best KI player. Nobody calls him a scrub. The criticism about Jr is his constant complaints about Injustice. As an Injustice player, he is a "lesser" player because his results state as much. But yeah, we know he doesn't really like the game. It's just that he makes sure to remind us about 292929 times. But nobody discredits the dude as a fighting game player and in last week's episode, he was brought up by at least 2 people on the panel as one of the guys who will do very well in MKX. So again, I can only speak for the podcast and not the rest of the community.

I don't understand why there has to be so much effort to do this. The only issue some people have with EC tournaments is pretty obvious and pertains to recent drama. It's quite justified, but let's not revisit that debate.

In closing, I really think you're discussing issues that aren't really there, unless you consider "dick-riding" an issue. I don't, personally.

I'm not getting too into this, because @CD jr and you ended the discussion already, but jr did get top 8 (5th?) at CEO in Injustice, even though he was public about how he didn't like the game.

Not sure how that's relevant. Jr actually had good results at Injustice right up until EVO 2013. After that, he didn't. We can argue about why all day long, but that's not the point. Anyway, given that we're talking about someone who's an MLG winner in MK9 and an EVO finalist, as well as an EVO winner in KI, the standards applied to him are higher than most. It's actually a compliment to his skills as a player that we hold him in such high regard, and that him getting fifth at an Injustice major one time is nothing to write home about.

Maaaan I'm just saying that whatever jr plays, we got his back and support him in his grind to the top :)

Also, I love GGA. I have no beef with any scenes. I don't see the podcast as dickriding, either. VSM had its time in the spotlight, and GGA has had their spot for a while now. There should be no beef, but rather a hunger to get back to the top, come MKX!

Awesome intro! Nice work @Eric Z19 !

Khrome was mentioned so all is good.
I was mentioned but not blown up so thanks I guess. :DOGE

Great podcast guys. Everyone makes a lot of good points. Definitely a good listen.

I gotta disagree about all of the infraction ideas. Sounds like you guys just gotta lighten up.

And as for Saucy talking about this website being only for serious competitive players who want to do better at tournaments, I disagree as well. I agree that this site's main goal is to level people up, but not everyone is a super serious tournament player. The majority of people on this site, imo, are casual players who don't travel to tournaments. And with casual players comes casual chit chat, including gifs and shooting the shit. Everything doesn't have to have "lvling up value"

Come On Die Young
@G4S Claude VonStroke CD Jr is a bad injustice player. The point isn't that he wouldn't be good if he took the game seriously. But right now, he is not a good Injustice player. We don't pump up Infiltration in mk9 just because he could probably dominate if he took that seriously too. I don't know anyone, "anti-east coast" or not, who doesn't think Jr is a good fighting game player who will probably be successful in MKX if he devotes himself to it.

As far as the east coast stuff goes, it's just the mentality that a lot of people have of the east coast being the main NRS scene or something, and its players pumping themselves up for doing well here when they haven't done well elsewhere. Not that someone placing at a tournament like Summer Jam shouldn't get props, just that it's not the same kind of success as placing at a national-level tournament. I actually think KDZ is a really good player, but with how he's performed outside our tournaments, I can't deny that he's not on top anymore like he was a year ago. It's not either KDZ is a top 3 Injustice player or he's a scrub, it's that we now have a bunch of players ahead of him who weren't before until shown otherwise. I think before NEC 2013, we were undoubtedly the best scene for Injustice. But that's changed and has shown so by national-level results, the problem some people have with it is that certain players don't want to accept it.

With the "best scene" debate, it's pretty complicated imo. The current best Injustice player doesn't really have a scene, and the next person down (Theo) has a scene of inconsistent results. It's hard for me to say a certain scene is the strongest because of one player. In mk9, if you believed that PL was the best player, it would still be hard to argue that Ohio was a stronger scene than New York. I would say as a scene, it would be between GGA and Florida. GGA is more nationally carried by 16bit, but PPJ has a couple strong placements as well, and Max had a great showing at KIT. Florida, however, I believe has had a top 8 placer in every major they've attended since last year's NEC in Whiteboi, Noobe, Gross, and Deg. So in terms of strength overall in its players I'd probably give it to them.
