I got UMK3 for XBL early in 2007, as I got a 360 for Christmas. UMK3 was the first game I got on the 360, and played nothing but it, Halo 2, and GoW for awhile. I was searching for somewhere to talk about the game, and came across ultimatemk.com, which was ran by @Shock and @dreemernj . I was a complete scrub back then, and was a horrible member. I mean, it was my first ever forum and I was like 17 years old, excuses I guess.

Once MKDC came out, I heard about a site called MKU from @Konqrr. I joined the site and immediately had a bad reputation. I had been infiniting people with Superman and that was considered cheating to them. So from day 1 I was defending myself and promoting the high level mentality.

ultimatemk.com shut down its forums and classicmk.com opened, with @ZAQ at the helm of the site. After awhile, @STORMS and @Krayzie created this site to be a sister site to MKU, which that aspect of it didn't really last too long. This site was made for tournaments, high level players/mentality, strategy, community, etc. And because of me always advocating the playing to win mentality and trying to promote tournaments, they asked if I would want to be apart of the staff here. Back then, it was called "Mortal Kombat Empires", aka MKE. It was just a placement holder name. I was the 9th member on the site, I believe.

umk.com, cmk.com and TYM eventually all merged together. We started out as just a handful of people wanting to improve the community and create a place where the competitive players could go and talk about tournaments and strategy. None of us ever imagined we would one day have over 25,000+ members, and be called the home for all things competitive in the NRS community. I'm glad I stayed, because in the beginning it was rough with all the drama and issues, but we grew from it and it's why we're still here and going strong today!

I can't remember much about how I first got to TYM, but I remember how I got into the FGC. I first played MKII on my Game Boy Color when I was younger and I must have been about 8 when I beat the ladder using only specials I looked up in the manual lol. The next one I remember playing was Deception (which remains my favourite MK to this day even though I didn't play it at high level) as well as Shaolin Monks, Armageddon and of course MK9 (you're damn right I didn't play MK vs DC).

Getting into high level MK9 was actually by chance, I was browsing My Little Pony Rule 34 videos on YouTube and one of my recommended videos was Tom Brady's Sub Zero vs someone on Khan's Coliseum. I watched it and was interested in one of the combos Tom did, so I went into practice and copied it. One combo and suddenly I was hooked. I looked at more high level play, watching Pig's Mileena in MK9 EVO 2011 I think it was, and decided I liked the look of Mileena so I mained her from then on and got better :)
MLP Rule 34 on YT? Scrub you can't find that on there...so I've heard

Oh boy. TYM, for all the problems I have had with it, has been integral in my life for a couple years now.

I had no idea about competitive fighters when MK9 dropped. In fact, I hadn't touched anything MK related since probably MKII in a bowling alley arcade when I was a kid.

I was a competitive L4D and L4D2 player, and at the end of L4D2s life, we were Bodying everyone. Went undefeated on Game Battles for an entire season, and basically thought we were gods gift to gaming. Two of the guys from my L4D team picked up MK9 and told me it was fun, so I grabbed it.

Turns out while I may have been a top player in L4D....I was booty Butt cheeks at fighting games. So I googled "Kano combos" and stumbled upon TYM.

This opened my eyes to a whole new world (cue Aladdin and Princess Jasmine). I started learning about what actually makes a fighting game player, and tournaments.

Finally I thought I was good. I was dominating people online. So I looked for local games, and found GGA. I went there with every expectation of being a beast, and blowing everyone away with things they had never seen.

After Soonk beat me appx 50-0, I realized the competitive fighters were serious, and I was still booty Butt cheeks.

Now we are here. I'm lucky enough to be team GGA, and have made countless friends in this community. Sometimes TYM, you da bes'. Sometimes.

I got into the FGC when i first looked up MK9 vids and specifically the multiplayer (i've always been a multiplayer type guy) and eventually started watching vids made by FTR Hood "x-ray dat bitch" Fresh amd was instantly hooked. After a while he hyped up Injustice before its release. When IGAU dropped, i bought it day 1 and was determined to try and get good at the game. After that i looked for Injustice vids and, after a long time searching, i found Tru3Ta1ent. At the time, i thought he was a good flash player and someone that i coupd learn the game from. Months past and i started to watch tournaments but was looking for a place to learn more about the game. I looked to shoryuken.com first, but quickly found that no one went on that site for Injustice. I remembered tru3 saying something about TYM once, looked it up, and loved it ever since. Even though there is some crap on this site, i love TYM for the fact that we're sort of one big family :).

Prepare for a long story:

When I was small(I'm talking 4 or 5 years old) I used to bottom mash my way through Soul Blade and MK for my Playstation. Once I started playing RPGs I fell off from fighters. Back when I was in 4th(or maybe 5th) grade my uncle bought me, my brother and my cousin random Gameboy Advance games. The one he got for me was Guilty Gear Advance Edition. I was blown away with the moves and the supers and the 8-bit soundtrack. I would bottom mash my way with Anji and Jam for hours on end. But once again I left fighters behind.

This is when it gets hot. I was in a One Piece Forum when I saw a guy with a sig of Joe from KOF. I thought he looked cool so I checked it out. Now, I had remembered those Maximum Impact commercials from years before and because I was a horny preteen I ended up looking for images of Mai Shiranui. This led me to a...''manga'' where Kensou and Mai have some ''adult fun''. From that moment on Kensou has been my favorite fighting game character.

Anyway, I was introduced to the FGC through the Southtown Ranbats for KOF. My mind was blown by how awesome the combos looked and how hype the guys got. I eventually found Dream Cancel and followed the FGC of almost all games since then.

Now, I found TYM when Injustice was announced. I was intruiged by this scene because unlike most other communities there was plenty of non-FG discussions going on. So I joined and have been here ever since.

Sure, there was that half year hiatus I took because I could not bring myself to play Injustice when Scorpion was released, but I came back because the community is rad and I have not just found fellow MK fans, but also fellow Whovians, Bronies, Comicbook fans and more.

While my future with MKX is uncertain I would like to stick around just because I think this is one of the best communities IMO.

TL,DR?
Bottom Mashing, Mai Hentai, FGC, MK.

Are ya' ready for MK11 kids?!
Had been lurking around as a guest on multiple FGC sites since around 2007, it wasn't until 2011 that Capcom's stranglehold on majors was starting to show big chinks in it's armor, other IPs were given exposure and I decided to bite the bullet. It was a nice coincidence that MK9 was also released that year I guess, but it was the community's atmosphere that kept me hooked more than anything. I honestly expected to jump ship when TTT2 was released, but, the (mostly) monotonous teletubbies in the Tekken community just wasn't cutting it for me.

A bunch of kids in my college hall were really into Brawl and we used to play together for hours every day. We watched a lot of Brawl/Melee so we were aspiring to play at the high level. I was aware of the FGC or at least the Smash side but I knew how wildly popular SF and Marvel were.

Late summer of 2012 I was at a little get-together and we started playing MK9. @G4S MinotaurLord was bopping everyone and I thought it looked really cool so I asked him to teach me. He taught me the whole game, many general FG concepts, etc. and showed me TYM so I could learn more.

I seriously think I first found out about the FGC from seeing the daigo parry video.
DAMN you beat me to it lol. I was VERY into street fighter 3rd strike, MVC2, CVS2 and Guilty Gear X... All on the dreamcast. My friends and I used to hang out and play for hours and hours, a big group of us. Once I saw Daigo vs Justin Wong I was so blown away and wanted to be a part of it any way I can. :)

I've always loved MK but never got in depth with any of the games. After MK9 released I bought it, played it and eventually traded it in for another game. Some COD I believe. @WayoftheFist told me about the tournament scene and he was thinking about going to one. I didn't think much of it because he always bodied me and didn't think I was good enough to go. (I thought they were all invitational for some reason.)

Well I had a pretty serious back injury that required surgery. So with no job and nothing else to do I watched some videos that Fist recommended. Devastation 2011. Amazed I rebought the game joined TYM and started training.

About a month later I attended FRXV. Yes I thought I had a chance at winning. LOL.

But that's how I joined. Thanks to @WayoftheFist and watching @AK Pig Of The Hut, @Tom Brady, @CD jr and @R.E.O.

Was looking for Zatanna tech on youtube and ran into a video that said the intro of "Testyourmight forums." I checked the place out, made an account and now its like an addiction. :p

I follow games I don't even play.
Heh, I do the same thing. I just love fighting games!

I played SF2 and MK1-3 in arcades as a kid as everyone else, but the game that really got me into fighting games was Tekken 3. I was obsessed. I played everyone I could find in Tekken from that day forward. As a college sophomore in 2001, I saw a flyer on campus for a Tekken tournament. I couldn't wait to go, assuming that - since I was by far the best player I knew - I was going to mop everyone up. Nope!... the infamous old-school Hwoarang player hwoarang675 was there and DESTROYED EVERYONE.

I got his number before I left*, and through playing with him, he introduced me to Tekken Zaibatsu, the tournament scene, etc. Everything else flowed from there.

*still friends to this day, even though neither of us really play Tekken anymore!

MK9 was free for PS Plus so me and my cousin downloaded it. We button-mashed our way through the story-mode and then decided that we should try to get better so we learned the characters special attacks and went onto online/offline tag. After getting tired of only doing Smoke's teleport we went onto YT to try and find some combos. There we found those 3Min character guides which were awesome at the time. We practiced those and then thought we were dabes (we were still scrubs).

Injustice was announced and we were hyped. We told each other who we were gonna main (I said Nightwing, this hoe is loyal), bought the game and it was awesome. I found some of Sajam's Nightwing videos and he said 50/50s are great, so I went and found my own 50/50 with Nightwing (I'd literally dash up D3, then B2 Escrima Fury... Still a better Nightwing than Shazz).

I saw some of Tru3Talent's videos and thought he was amazing, then I saw one of the comments say "Which site is better to find combos, MKU or TYM?". At the time I didn't know what either site was so I just kinda flipped a coin and arrived on TYM (Praise the Lord). I lurked for about 2 months while watching Sajam and TrueTalent before I got to a half-decent level and found my first piece of Nightwing tech. It took me about an hour to record because my execution was so bad, and I still ended up dropping the combos in the video. But loads of people liked it so I stopped lurking and started posting a lot of tech.

It's funny how life turns out. Back when I was a scrub, if you would've told me that I would become one of the best Nightwing players in Europe, I would've laughed and gone back to mashing Smoke's teleport. Thanks TYM.

I was originally on Gamefaqs way before MK9 came out, so then when the game was announced I was on those boards for a long time, and I remember seeing people talk about TYM, but I didn't really look into it until the MK9 boards on Gamefaqs started to really die off. Even then I didn't make an account right away, until I found myself coming over here more and more.

Reading this thread, I'm actually surprised at how many people are fairly new to the greater FGC overall. Or maybe I'm not? Wait, now I don't know hahaha.

Regardless, really great that so many newer people are enjoying competitive fighting games!

Yes sir.

Tekken 3 was the first game I really got into seriosuly. Once Tekken Tag came out, I was fucking balls deep in that shit. Tekken Tag 1, to this day, is still my favorite game of all time.

There's a dude that works at a local bar I go to all the time. He randomly started talking about Tekken and how good he was. I told him I wanted to play him and he said he would destroy me. He asked me to play first to 10 for 100 bucks. He talked shit alllll week. I screen capped it all.

I beat him 27-0. He won 1 round total because I forgot how to block some shitty Law tenstring. After I humbled him I told him "you don't understand how long I was a virgin. I had nothing better to do but play this game."

Aside from making fun of myself, beating the shit out of him felt great.
