I have been thinking a lot about this over the years in both my character choice and my play style. The question is more about how you change your style in either setting and what is most effective in either setting. Let me start by defining the different play styles possible and then consider variables that may vary them in an online or offline setting.

Let me also say, that there isn't necessarily a right or wrong here. Just observations I want to share and get feedback on.

Styles:
Aggressive - All out offense in either the form of rushdown or zoning. It could be either but its best described by needing to constantly doing something. REO is a player that embodies this style best IMO. His kabal overwhelmed you with both rushdown and zoning but he was always doing something. Pig's Zod and Noobe are other great examples of this.

Footsies - Focuses on the space between them and their opponent at all times but isn't doing something all the time. Part of it is patients and the other part is offense. I feel that MIT and DJT embody this more than anyone else in their patient, yet successful with many characters style. Wound Cowboy also comes to mind.

50/50 - Conditioning is a priority above all else and is part of a set long meta in tournament. In a 3/5 tourney match they may try to win 2 of 3 games by going low only to go overhead in the last game. Mind games and out thinking your opponent are how they will win. Sonic Fox and 16 bit are great examples that come to mind.

There are probably more styles I could mention and infinite variations of combined styles that you could use to classify players. Each style can overcome the others in different ways but in an online setting does this stand true? I try to play a "footsie" based game with NW but when I play online I tend to play a combination of aggressive and 50/50...footsies go out the window.

I have come to my own conclusions based on this and I feel that there is a strong consistency between "Online Warriors" and their styles. My opinion is that aggressive players have a strong advantage in an online setting. When you zone or rushdown constantly and your opponent has to "react" to interrupt your patterns, wouldn't they be at a disadvantage due to the natural delay online? Valuable frames are lost and punish windows are minimized. We all know this and have had it happen to us while playing. I just wanted to see the communities opinion.

Which style of play does online favor more?
1) Aggressive
2) Footsies
3) 50/50

Also...which styles do you embody online...offline?

Good read.

Online, aggressive for sure. Feels like I have to be to compensate for certain online factors. If the connection is even a tiny bit off then even dashing after a projectile can become a chore. The solution? Get in there and never back off. Footsie players are at a pretty big disadvantage in general online. (minus Aquaman)

I actually feel like I play different offline, I just have a lot more patience when I know that there are no variables involved. Just the game.

Aggressive definitely. I can't do anything if you're dashing up. As green lantern I constantly have to take risks and go off guesses instead of reactions. @FOREVER EL1TE had pretty good reactions when I played him though.

I will walk all over you and maul you as hard as I can until you prove to me you can defend and pay me back with the same coin. Then I'll actually take your footsies and spacing seriously and stop underestimating you. Same way I played Subzero, Joker, Adam, Adon.

Applies to both off and online.

Every style applies...that's not the point. My question is whether or not one is at an advantage online.

I think aggressive bodes best online, it's hard to use a 50/50 playstyle in certain connections, and I try to play footsies, well trying to learn to play footsies, online is just a hassle imo.

Really good topic. I actually try to play a footsie based style of injustice(lol right?), and it's extremely difficult to do online. The only time a player will respect your neutral is if you punish them for jumping in, dashing in, or other measures for getting in consistently, all of which are extremely difficult to do in an online setting compared to offline.

I feel online really plays to aggressive zoning or aggressive rushdown, and the majority of players I play online usually play this way. Only a rare select few try to play a footsie based play style online, which in my opinion leads to the best type of matches.

gotta stay sharp!
I play footsies online and off. Mostly cause online alot of randoms have tells and patterns which I think DD can exploit. And sometimes it transfers to solid players and i can get blown up early then adapt. Cause not all players play the same. But since so many people wake up online i have a hard time going as aggressive as I would like to be. Offline, @pantychrist says I play footsies with DD too haha.

I've been saying for a while that as an online warrior who watches Injustice tournaments religiously, many characters online seem almost like psuedo versions of themselves. Take Aquaman as an example. Between FTD, Trident Rush, and his normals like D2 he dominates footsies better than any other character.....but online even his D2 can't always be used on reaction consistently. On some connections against characters like Batman I have to be ready to D2 well before I see the other player actually jump, and if I'm not prepared and try to do it on reaction It will get stuffed.

The end result is that I practically play Aquaman as a rushdown character at times, but I have little doubt that if I were to try and bring that style offline it would get me blown up and I would eventually be forced into the extreme lame turtle style that defines him so thoroughly.
