Can someone please explain to me what is going on with this pony stuff. I looked it up and the show is called "My Little Pony". I watched part of an episode and it's just ponies running around... I don't get it. Is it like some kind of fantasy thing? All over the internet people have these ponies as profile pictures, they talk about them on forums, there are multiple videos about them on Youtube. It's freaking me out, and I know for a fact that most of these people are grown men.

If someone could please explain this to me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Edit:
Basically the same person who made powerpuff girls, and Fosters Home for Imaginary Friends got tasked with rebooted My Little Pony. The creators fans were curious so they checked out the show when it aired. To their surprise after seeing the first two episodes it was really good and the characters were pretty fun. Then odd stuff happened and folks started noticing things like background ponies being Dr. Who references and a lot of Star Wars/Star Trek reference stuff started popping up. It kept getting weird and some moments like Twilight and Pinkie in seperate episodes losing their minds complete and really good expression work made it this odd ball event people would just drag someone to see because...well...no one expected MLP to be like a normal ass cartoon.

Folks began supporting it as a cartoon and it bridged a lot of boundaries between demographics because it was genuinely entertaining compared to what that franchise always used to be. Hell, I got a BA in Animation and I'm genuinely impressed with just how far they've pushed flash using actual bone and bind 3d methods and rig systems on 2d symbol tween shapes. Damned impressive infrastructure was put into the show's animation to allow it to be fast and produceable at a high level of quality and variety.

Thats pretty much it. You like it or you dont. The fanbase, like any other, will have some super loud and vocal eccentrics that make it just fucking unbearable but thats everything these days from Dr. Who, to Sherlock, to videogames. Enjoy it for what it is dont judge it by its more eccentric fans. Those sorts of folks get creepy over whatever fanbase they latch onto anyways.

Condescending remarks aside, I don't get the obsession either. It doesn't necessarily creep me out or bother me though, if you enjoy cartoon ponies, knock yourself out. I probably will never get why grown men like it and obsess over it though, but I really don't care either, so hey... go nuts! lol

I dunno, it's just one of those modern phenomenons that makes no sense really.

Maybe it could be down to lack of female interaction or something. Who knows? It's definitely weird, but www.cringechannel.com does need to get its content somewhere lol.

As long as they aren't hurting anyone or pushing it onto others I just say let them do their freaky shit, could be worse, they could be ISIS.

No I've seen it for a while, but now I'm asking. And I still don't have the iphone 6
To explain it the way I usually do, theres two types of fans.

Bronies are people whose enjoyment is central to ponies. Its more a reason than a cause, but basically the fact that they are ponies is central. They find the characterization of them preferable. That's all. Other than that, they are normal fans.

Fans of the show are simply people who enjoy the good scripting, solid animation, and how open they are to the community. Lauren Faust is a genius when it comes to cartoons, Tara Strong is a top tier VA, and with that line-up they can appreciate the quality, regardless if its superpowered children, imaginary friends, or ponies.

I'm a big animation nut and there's a lot of kids cartoons that I enjoy and think are great. MLP isn't one of those escapes for me, but plenty of grown ass men enjoy Disney and Pixar. Not a whole lot different from MLP in my eyes and there's nothing wrong with watching and enjoying it.

What is wrong are these turbosperg bronies who have to shove ponies into everything and ruin it for everyone. Then when they get criticized for being retards, they start screaming about gender politics or autism or some other pseudo-victim bullshit to deflect from their complete lack of shame and self-awareness. They're not worth getting all frustrated and angry over, I just pity them for being so delusional. I ignore them or laugh at them and move on. Case in point:

Ponies are only a minor representative of the dark side of the internet. You should feel lucky that you find that weird. At some point if you keep going, you will not even be phased by worse anymore.

I don't understand many interests on the internet. I don't watch the show, and never have, but I know that the bronies I've met are some of the nicest people. Most of the people who seem to make fun of bronies are losers in the real world (White kids who watch anime, guys who try to get with every girl that talks to them, tumblr kids, etc), but I'll leave it at that.
that sounds more like the bronie demographic tbh

I just enjoy the show. Idk why. I guess im able to relate to the characters or something like that. I somewhat relate the show to when i watched Power Puff Girls growing up. The show was good. Although somewhat girly. I still enjoyed the show. The same people who made PPG made MLP so it might be a slight nostalgic feeling. I have meet a mixture of people who like the show and like all fandoms there are the bad and the good. Thats something people have to understand. There is always an extreme end to something but then there are the people who do not go overboard in a bad way.

TLDR: FLUTTERSHY BEST PONY.

Yay!

Like all things, there are extremists who decide what the entire fan base looks like/does. That seems to be what's going on here.

Let me go over my "obsession" with everyone. (that is, my personal support/commitment to a thing that I like):

-I haven't had time to watch season 4 yet.

-The MLP chat on this site has been dead for about a year now, as I don't have terribly much time to invest into it (I do other things, like hate on Destiny and work)

-I buy the comics every month and don't even read them. My fiance' does.

-She collects the hot topic vinyl figures and the plushies, and I just go through them and take the Rarity ones.

Other than that, I'm a pretty unassuming looking guy outside of tym. :)

Naw, here's a good scenario. There's some kid in my dorm, who hates My Little Pony, but loves anime. One of those "ur fukin autistic m8. get rekt" kids. His main source of entertainment is trying to impress by making fun of some kid with autism down the hall. He doesn't do it in front of me because I'll smack the shit out of him, but that is besides the point.

On the other hand, there's a friend I know a few states away. He's a huge My Little Pony fan, and one of the lead reps in the community, and he is probably the nicest person I've ever met. He's not some creepy, pony-fetish guy. Just a genuinely nice guy, who also enjoys My Little Pony.

It basically comes down to who you know. If you can base your opinion on people you only know on the internet, I can base it off people I know in real life.
you assume i dont base my opinion on 'real life' people i know or that some how the internet is not real life - because you have one example of the contrary
