This doesn't necessarily affect me much because I commute and I'm about to graduate this fall, but this is for the University that I attend and I was wondering why everyone might have to say about it. What kinds of implications could this mean for the future?

Discuss.

Edit: I know about the update at the bottom of the article too.

Double Edit: Because I can't read what I'm typing apparently, assume the poll is just "Do you agree?". Was thinking that but actually typed more.

First, is this a public University? Cause I'm not sure they can legally do that. Private, not sure how that'll work. Either way, glad to see University's getting on board with censorship, really gives a great impression for an institution that promotes its ungodly cost by saying you can be free to find yourself (college standards, not this specific one)

I graduated from Fordham University, and ALL of my professors used Wikipedia extensively.

Banning it is moronic and unfit for education- it's a relic of "those people" who still think Wikipedia is just some "wild west" of information where nothing there is cited (almost EVERYTHING there is cited and linkable to a verifiable scholarly journal)

Everyone has cell phones now and they would just use that anyways. But yeah....universities censoring stuff like that is BS. MURICA

One of my professors once vandalized a wikipedia page to prove it was unreliable. I think he got IP banned after that and it was fixed in a few hours.

I know in HS one of my friends edited Abraham Lincolns page to say he was assassinated by me. That didnt last long and I see that page is now uneditable, lol. She also got my friends computer IP banned.

I write too much.
What they allow on their network is their own decision.

As long as this doesn't affect dorms (Which I think have to go through school networks? I know mine did when I lived in one), then there is nothing wrong with trying to ensure that students focus on scholarly things while at school.

That said, this isn't high school, it's fucking college. The students are paying to be there and you should not need to babysit what are essentially adults paying for a service.

They are not technically in the wrong.
That said, the decision is stupid and pointless. As others said, everyone has cell phones/laptops/tablets to go on these sites should they want to, and the school is really just pissing people off for no reason.
