NRS does ALS Ice Bucket challenge

Can someone explain to me what dumping water on your head has to do with ALS?
Basically it's supposed to raise awareness and motivate people to donate. It has had a surprising impact to the amount of donations. Even with not even half of the people donating, it is still helping. It may seem dumb but it does help raise money even if the people aren't donating.

LBSH, 90% of the people who are doing this are doing it for attention. I didnt even know what it was for until NRS explained in this video(props to them for that). But if it gets the ALS organization money then I can't really hate on it.

You are right. Most people doing it haven't donated a dime, but the people that have are making a huge impact. So you have a small right to hate.

Not to be a hater, but does this really raise awareness? I didn't know that ALS was Lou Gehrigh's (spellcheck) disease until I looked it up, I've just seen a lot of people doing a really lame test of courage

Many of us did donate to the cause. ALS has made 19 million from this campaign of awarness, last year this time they made 1.9 million. Be cynical if you like, but it is working.

Thank goodness someone gets the point.

Even if you don't donate, many people probably looked up ALS, heard of ALS, and is now aware that there is something called ALS.

It's better than nothing.

What does the color pink and ribbons have to with Breast Cancer awareness? Yet athletes take fines to spread awareness and there's marathons and walks and all kinds of events, it's an outlet to get the word out.

Or growing a beard for men for Prostate Cancer awareness?

It's just things people do.

Nothing.

Some are doing the challenge as well as donating...but a lot aren't. Which is dumb.
That guy dropping the huge bin full of water on that girl's head was epic. If you pause right as it hits her head it literally looks like it decapitated her. (I don't wish harm on her, but damn was it funny to watch)

Edit: It's actually in here.

(PS I don't dislike the challenge and do understand it is also for awareness)

The big problem with medical research right now is funding, but not because of lackluster donations...
Donations for ALS are way up as a result of this awareness campaign, from something like 1.7 million dollars last year to over 13 million dollars so far this year.
However, medical research FUNDING has continued to be cut repeatedly in favor of keeping our military significantly overfunded. This has resulted in billions of dollars being cut from the NIH budget (major source of funding for pretty much all biomedical research, including ALS), significantly more than this campaign has raised.
I like the ice bucket challenge, fad-ish though it has become, but it approaches the problems from the wrong angle. You wanna make a difference, not just with ALS, but with everything? Vote. Get your congressional representation out of office and elect someone else that will get budgets done well and appropriately distribute funds.
Or dump water on your head. Whatever works.

The challenge also gives people who can't donate an opportunity to still be involved. For example, as a teen with no job I don't have a hundred dollars to donate. However by doing the video, while not helping directly, maybe I got the attention of somebody who could donate. It's obviously working based on the numbers so far.

Ding Ding Ding.

I already donated to ALS before seeing these videos btw. My point was a lot of people aren't even raising awareness because most of them don't even say it is for ALS.

That hasn't been my experience, but I haven't been following them much. All the hashtags and stuff I've seen have still had the ALS tag in there.
But yeah, it's not that they are sending a bad message, just that they are sending a somewhat misguided one that distracts from the real issue.
