During GamesCom in Cologne, Germany this past week TheKombatTether was able to get an exclusive interview with Ed Boon. They recently released a full Mortal Kombat X impressions list, which you can find here.

In this interview, The Kombat Tether dive deep asking questions about even when NetherRealm Studios first began working on Mortal Kombat X. The list of questions are long and Boon answers every one of them... even if he can't really answer it... yet. Check it out below!

"Our interview with Ed Boon is below! If you're still starved for additional information, you can view our notes from our Mortal Kombat X play sessions right here.

The Kombat Tether: How are you enjoying Gamescom so far, Ed?

Ed Boon: It's awesome, the reaction has been great, thanks for asking!

When did Mortal Kombat X first enter the development stage? Rumours claim that work began prior to the conception of Injustice.

Yes, we always start the next game before we are done with the previous ones, so we had started working on the graphic engine and getting everything over for next-gen quite a bit, long before Injustice so a lot of work went into it.

Can you confirm the actual purpose for the flip stance button? Many fans have questioned its necessity in MK9 and Injustice. Could we see it become replaced by something more substantial like a taunt button for example?

Yeah you know what, I don't think that has been decided yet. I think currently it's just there because we've had it before. Some people liked to change their stance to be in front but even within us there is debate to decide if we want to keep the button for that. It's an interesting question. *laughs*

Now that a running mechanic returns to Mortal Kombat, do you feel this will change the meta-game despite it being governed by the new stamina meter and with dash-cancelling a thing of the past?

Erm... No I think that because it is governed by it that's something we are going to do to cap it, but we do want to have as aggressive of a fighting mechanic because you're also going to be jumping off of these objects and getting really long jumps and so we really want the player to be able to do something. So it's not just you escaping and then all of a sudden there's this 'long time' and not so much action. Dash cancelling is gone yeah.

Will we see any classic or previous MK stages in the game? We can certainly name a few fan favourites.

Oh like The Pit and all that stuff? Erm, I think the vast majority of them are new. You know we're trying to just, philosophically, introduce as much new elements as we can. You know Mortal Kombat 9 was really a like a tribute to the first three games, bringing everything back, all the backgrounds; so many of them were things that you saw from before. We are taking the opposite approach now, we want to have as much newness as possible to the game.

In this Gamescom build there are five slots in the finishing moves list for each character, for example, two fatalities, a stage fatality and two yet to be announced alities, Is it likely this format will remain in the final game?

Probably not. *smiles*

TKT: There was some confusion at E3 in regards to multiple X-Rays per character. Was this a mistake on behalf of the interviewer or will characters in fact have more than one X-Ray move across their variations?

.... they mostly come at night. Mostly.
great interview .... the following months will bring a tortuous anxiety about each piece of revelation we have to see yet regarding this game .... :p

Most humble shit talker ever!!!
lots of information thats not showing here from the main article

such as it may have more slots than MK9

but most dissapointing reading is for a a next reveal "in the upcomming months" though very vague, sounds like ages

Ok, Kahn is a title, Mileena might be in, no Jade's ending woman, Brutality is a high chance of being in there. And Outworld fucked up real bad trying to take Earth lol

Fujin and Ermac for MK 11
Nice, so the big things are

-Multiple Xrays was a rumor and misunderstanding PER style. Check

-Sub-Zero is probably a cousin or descendant of Bi-Han and Kuai Liang I'm betting(he already confirmed there will be more "relatives" of characters we love. I doubt this is Bi Han or Kuai Lian...could be but given them stressing the "new characters" element, doubtful calling it now this is a new Sub-Zero all together, probably or possibly more powerful too if he can feel or has been in charge of protecting an entire realm at some point.(as we see him arguing with Raiden intro)Check.

-Different timeline will change some MK 4-MKA things played out so perhaps we won't see some things we know or saw in those games, understandable. Check.

-FINALLY, someone else who's thinking on my brainwaves...with DC getting the damn license for more MK comics(preferably canon like Injustice's is with theirs) Seriously, DC or Vertigo HAVE to do this at some point, I mean we have Boarderlands, Silent Hill, Halo etc. Some of which people not for nothing don't give a shit about lol trust me I go every week to my comic shops, and NOBODY goes nuts over these. Injustice? Yes. Those books? No lol. WB is missing a prime opportunity here, especially now that the movie gig fell through for now...I know the tourney only guys won't give a shit but believe me as someone who's followed MK as long as the oldest MK fan, the general fanbase WOULD give a shit. Hell, I'll fucking write some issues if I convinced WB lol. Check!

-Still, I want Fujin and Ermac!!! Fuck Mileena! That kinky bitch can be locked in a cave somewhere in OW masturbating to skeletons for all I care lol. Fujin by timeline HAS to appear at some point and Ermac was also technically a survivor of Shao Kahn's guys, though probably good or neutral now that he's dead, therefore shouldn't be under his control anymore. Check!

-Boon has mentioned the don't assume about Sonya before, the more he says this the more I think Sonya is in there...probably a MILF no doubt too. Wonder if Cage is in there too. I do see a possibility of Kano killing one of them and then Cassie killing off Kano. Just a feeling I have honestly....Who knows.

There is no denying that this game is going to be beyond Godlike.

We'll have to come up with a new term to describe it.
How about MK X=Best fucking fighter ever made?! lol Especially if that trailer view is any indication, we get more tourneys, media(comics and movies looking at you) other fighters will be like "fuck..." lol

Telling you right now dude, over the next few years I predict two fighters dominating MK X and Smash 4. Injustice will probably still do well but slow down, MVC will be a memory and SSF4 will just be there because "it's that one capcom game".

Live by the sword, Die by the sword
Death isn't everlasting in MK.

So that means all that died in MK9 has a possibility of coming back.

Finally, are there any secrets that you are aware of that have not been discovered in any previous Mortal Kombat games. Could we get a hint?

"That's a tough one. Not that I can think of off the top of my head. There have been a lot of secrets in the games over the years."

There's still hope

Brutality Konfirmed (yes).

Sonya and Cage konfirmed, wich almost kompletes the MK1 roster (scorpion, sub-zero, raiden, kano, sonya, cage, liu kang).

Lots of female characters in-bound, hopefuly the KJS trio and Skarlet are one the few of them, Tanya too.

Finger crossed for Fujin, Nightwolf (needs redemption from what they did to him in mk9) and Noob Saibot.

Top row 4 slots will be: Cyrax, Sektor, Cage, Sonya. 4 slots on the top for more 4 returning characters still available.

Kia and Jataaka would be new characters if they be in MKX, due the fact that they never were playable, would basically make a debut, noobde hinted sareena past month.

I hope you're right, Dr. Wang. Oh, throw Reptile/Mileena (if she is not, in fact, D'Vorah) in there too!
