What do you do for work?

Good Lord it really is just rainbows and Unicorns up there in Canada, isn't it?
I dunno about all that, but I'm not a social climber. I don't get a job and 5 mins later go "OK. Now I need a job with more money or more benefits." I also volunteer at a place that helps people find work. I look around me and I see a lot of people that can't pay their bills or don't have an apartment even to live in. So with my little part time job I am off the government dollar and making my own way in the world. I see a lot of people that can't even say that.

I think this song explains it best...

Electrical Engineering bitch!
What I do: Electronics engineer with a focus in signal processing. I currently work on tactical sonar systems deployed by the US and its allies naval systems. Cant say much more than that. . .
Duration: Going on year 6
Dream Job: Pretty much what im doing now. Job allows me to travel wherever I want for free. I enjoy making PCBs (printed circuit boards) and embedded systems for damn near any application.

I also do side jobs for various entities. The last thing I worked on was for a biomedical engineering company (since BME is essentially 1/3 of electrical engineering) where I designed a system that reads brainwaves and processes them using advanced algorithms and DSP. The key here was the electrodes being implemented; they are revolutionary and have a much better signal to noise ration (SNR) allowing for a greater degree of seizure detection.

For any of you people who are thinking of getting an art degree. . . DONT! Learn math and go engineering so you can eschew top ramen for the rest of your life.

Cheers!

Oh, my days !
Only the last link is working for me. Probably a privacy thing.

But even from just seeing the last link, it was a mistake. Seeing a picture of gorgeous donuts is not a good idea while fasting :S
OH! You're a fellow baker ? Did my doughnut picture make your evening ? :p

Oh I'm not. I wish I was :(
I'd love to be able to cook or bake stuff like that.
It's just that when I saw that picture of those amazing doughnuts I was fasting and I hadn't eaten anything for 12 or 13 hours. So you can imagine how I felt when I saw it!

Ah I definitely know what you mean. We have a proverb in Arabic that translates into "Contentment is a bottomless treasure."
You can live a very happy life if you are content and believe that what you have is enough.

That's commendable. I was a ref for a year once in a little kid league... Never again. Although I do like some of the cat calls. One time a guy pointed at me and yelled "If you had one more eye, you'd be a cyclops!"
Lol thats a good one.

Its really good practice for tuning stupid people out, definitely makes other areas of life a whole lot easier.

Props to you for your real job, dude. It's not something everyone can do due to lacking patience, sympathy, etc.
There's also schizophrenics and manic depressed people there too, conversations between these groups of people is better than reading m2dave arguing with PL & Tom Brady all at once.

Today I saw an 80+ year old head butt his way through a fire door.

While it's probably horrific for either of us to find that humorous, I can't help but find it funny. >_>

I couldn't work in a place like that. I have all the tolerance and patience in the world, but I would probably be laughing a little too often.

I Got Guiled
Current job: couch potato, living off whatever I win at FG tournaments and parents lmao. But I go to Uni as a chem major?

Dream job: doctor prob.
My advice is to not seek a career in chemistry. The job market for chemist tanked in 2008 and has not recovered. I was a synthetic chemist but due to the job market have been forced to reinvent myself as an analytical chemist.

Real Job. I am a chemist that works in Big Pharma. After my postdoc, I started off as medicinal chemist but now work as an analytical chemist supporting pilot plant operations and all that that entails (supporting development of API from synthetic to process chemistry, testing and releasing of raw materials and advanced intermediates, monitoring pilot plant batches in real time, releasing, retesting and performing stability studies on API ). My synthetic career spanned the years of 2002-2010. I have been doing analytical chemistry since 2010.

Dream Job. I would like to get out of the pharmaceutical industry, and transition to the less regulated industries of fragance and flavor with the long term goal of forming a CRO with former colleagues.

My advise is to check around and make sure that's the case. Here, I know far too many engineers who are _not_ making big bucks and are just happy to have a job.

The field became very saturated years ago.

Data analyst. Currently looking for a new place to work. So I guess my current job is Couch Potato/Dark Souls-er.

I graduated with a Political Science degree, with a focus on social statistics. I've mainly worked for places that have me using SPSS, SAS, and R.

I'm also a self-taught programmer, but I've never formally worked at a place that had me doing any serious programming outside my usual statistical packages. I can fluently write Perl, Python, Ruby, C++, Lua, PHP, Javascript, and SQL

On that note, I refuse to program in Java, and wouldn't take a job if I had to use it. It's such a goddam awful programming language. I really, really, really hate it.

Data analyst IS my dream job. I love doing this.

The only thing that could make it better is if my field wasn't 90% guys... I really miss not being around as many gals in college. I find them easier to talk to, and all the guys at my last job never talked about anything but video games...ughhh..
bruh, is all about the java life
