This isn't the thread for this conversation, but I'm starting to realize MK9 may have not been as unbalanced as I thought. When you think about who was winning tournaments, you come up with the same names over and over. Of course a high level player like REO is going to be a high level Baraka or something, but outside of him....who really? Detroit? yea he had his moment in the sun, but tournaments do have variables, as does life.
Top Cyraxes, Kabals and Laos:
REO
Detroit
Perfect Legend
Denzell

Great Kabals, Cyraxes and Laos that also won tournaments in the 'modern' era:
Kevo Da Man
Curbolicous
CD Jr.
Winter Warz
Forever King
P Board

People that consistently kept people who don't play those 3 characters from winning or making GF:
Pig of the Hut
Maxter

When these people were more or less present in force (once the game 'settled' after year one), Kabal/Cyrax/Lao won almost all of the tournaments.

At the highest level, they kept characters like Kitana, Jax, Cage, Sonya etc. from winning tourneys. When most of the top-level players of these characters showed up, they kept almost the entire rest of the cast under wraps in Top 8.

When a lot of these guys didn't travel (Final Round 2013, SB:A to some extent, SCR 2013 to some extent, ECT 2013, etc) then someone like Dizzy could pass through say, PL as his hardest opponent in Grand Finals and win. Or someone like, Sonic Fox or Wafflez. But when most of the top guys were there, they didn't win.

So when you think about it, although there were amazing and highly skilled players of various other characters (like Pig, 16 Bit, Tyrant, Dizzy, xSmokex, Riu48, WoundCowboy), someone outside of the 'Big 3' chars winning a tournament from Anaheim forward had more to do with who was there than game balance.

It's the same as saying, if Jupiter, Theo and Sonic Fox don't attend a tournament, a character other than the Injustice Big 3 stands a good chance of winning.

@TomlulsBrady @CD jr @Karried : Let me answer this for you.

@CrimsonShadow
KnowYourFacts 4.0:
CrimsonShadow Edition aka "Kabal/Cyrax/Lao** won almost all of the tournaments".

Notes:

  • Note 1: Kung Lao is not even top 5. But you surely named him to have a wider range of "truth" in your statement.
  • Note 2: **There you have a Bison-type option select that no matter what, will "prove you right". Since more than half of the top 10 best players (PL, REO, CDjr, Denzell, Detroit, Maxter) used Cyrax, Kabal and/or Lao at some point. So now, it's not the player (as you say when "REO can't win without Kabal" comes around) but the character. REO wins = Kabal is OP, PL wins = Lao is top 3 and so on...That would be like me saying: "name an Injustice post-patch tournament not won by MMH, Superman, Batgirl, Aquaman or Batman where Jupiter, KDZ, SonicFox, Theo and Forever King weren't there".
  • Note 3: Maxter (along MIT and DJT) was a counterpick master. He was, for sure, the best Cyrax. But he used Cage and Sektor as well. Sometimes even Lao and Kitana.

That's pretty much it. And here is where everything turns interesting.

Total number of tournaments: 37

Kabal-only wins: 8 (2 of them were Canadian tournaments)
Kung Lao-only wins: 1
Cyrax-only wins: 2
(Only one in the U.S.)

I'll edit these numbers later, first I have a few questions:

How do we count a major win for a certain character? Only if the player used nobody but that character throughout the entire tournament? Or the character that won the last match of grand finals?

That's pretty much it. And here is where everything turns interesting.

Total number of tournaments: 37

Kabal-only wins: 8 (2 of them were Canadian tournaments)
Kung Lao-only wins: 1
Cyrax-only wins: 2
(Only one in the U.S.)

I'll edit these numbers later, first I have a few questions:

How do we count a major win for a certain character? Only if the player used nobody but that character throughout the entire tournament? Or the character that won the last match of grand finals?
I enjoyed reading this just for the memories lol.

@TomlulsBrady @CD jr @Karried : Let me answer this for you.

@CrimsonShadow

I would count which Characters the person winnig used in Top8. If you count only Tournaments where a person used only one Character you cut down the potential sample size by alot.

What's funny is if you were to take any individual player's Kabal resume in MK9 history and compiled a list of all the tournaments they went to and where they placed specifically with Kabal, you can see the character factually wasn't as dominate as the perception many claim to have him on.
Compared to what other character?

That's pretty much it. And here is where everything turns interesting.

Total number of tournaments: 37

Kabal-only wins: 8 (2 of them were Canadian tournaments)
Kung Lao-only wins: 1
Cyrax-only wins: 2
(Only one in the U.S.)

I'll edit these numbers later, first I have a few questions:

How do we count a major win for a certain character? Only if the player used nobody but that character throughout the entire tournament? Or the character that won the last match of grand finals?
Damn bro, you went ham. Didn't expect you to blow your load, GG.

Guy seems to state HIS opinions as facts over people who actually attend and play the game consistently offline, I've seen him try to outsmart people regarding how the game is supposed to be played, MUs, etc over people who put in offline practice, with their own character....with theorycraft...

@TomlulsBrady @CD jr @Karried : Let me answer this for you.

@CrimsonShadow

Can I like this post 10000 times?

It's the same as saying, if Jupiter, Theo and Sonic Fox don't attend a tournament, a character other than the Injustice Big 3 stands a good chance of winning.
what is your obsession with saying inj is more balanced than mk9 dude? It really isn't like at all please stop

  • Note 3: Maxter (along MIT and DJT) was a counterpick master. He was, for sure, the best Cyrax. But he used Cage and Sektor as well. Sometimes even Lao and Kitana.
Kinda irrelevant but Maxter had a strong Raiden too, He used him to make top 8 at season beatings winter of 2011.

Top tiers characters will always exist im more than ok with that but when you make them easy to play like Aquaman or batgirl that's when I have a problem cause it hides the players weakness ass seen with some players Imo Jupiter is the best inj player hands down cause MMH takes alot of work to use people that have tried to counter pick with MMH like PL and otherS have gotten bodied Jupiter is THE only MMH and by the way he plays you can obviously tell he is putting in the work yeah he is cheap but he is the only player doing it Aquaman on the other hand you got rico counter pickin again't Darth arma, deg reseting brackets with AM, and other players getting far because of AM that's why I don't give a fuck what no one tells me I don't respect any AM players never will I don't care what player site behind that character AM is a mistake of a character and probably the worst design move of any fighting game in history which is his trait. People think that I hate on theo and give me the he is the only one doing shit with AM but he really isn't lol I can name 20 players that if they took the game serious will be way better AM players than theo cause they character is just that easy to use

Damn I use aquaman lmao, I guess I dnt get ur respect :p lol but on some real stuff, theo is smart going from nerfed supes to aquaman and more and more are using aquaman bcuz they have seen that A he isnt hard to learn and B he is great for counter picking.

  • Note 1: Kung Lao is not even top 5. But you surely named him to have a wider range of "truth" in your statement.
Kung Lao was in the Top 3 characters in terms of winning MK9 tournaments. Whoever the makers of imaginary tier lists hold as the top 3 doesn't matter, because that's not what the discussion is about.

Again, we're talking about tournament results -- not subjective tier.

Not at all. All of the players mentioned are highly skilled; but someone like Dizzy (who you didn't mention) is arguably as good of a player as anyone to play MK9. To say that Dizzy wasn't able to win as many tournaments with everyone else present because he wasn't on their skill level is 1) flat out wrong, but 2) shows that whoever was watching couldn't see the clear hurdle that trying to win as Cage with a Top 8 full of Kabal, Kenshi etc. was near impossible.

If you want to make a convincing argument, you have to look at the gameplay -- because it clearly shows the reasons for the results.

So again, the point is this: despite the fact that there were a lot of talented players, when everyone showed up it was an enormous uphill battle for most characters other than Kabal, Cyrax and Lao to actually win the tournament if most of the best players were present. That's evidenced by the results.

@Art Killer B -- Also, twisting the facts to downplay characters doesn't help your argument. For example, saying REO won CEO with Kenshi when he didn't use him the entire tournament and switched in Grand Finals for fun doesn't make any sense. That's not a tournament victory for a Kenshi main.

@CrimsonShadow is igau different from mk9 by top players putting in work with top tiers and I will make the list again:
Mk9: PL (lao), Reo( kabal) Maxter (cyrax) etc.
Igau: Theo (AM), sonicfox (BG) jupiter (mmh) etc.
Nothin has changed at all really.

To be accurate, if you're going by people who put in work:
Lao: PL, Jr. (I'll exclude PBoard for now since SCR 2014 is later in the game. Also King for similar)
Cyrax: Denzell, Maxter (I'll exclude WWarz since his Toryuken win was later on)
Kabal: REO, Kevo, Curbo, and Jr. at EVO 2012

Injustice:
Batgirl: Only Sonic Fox has made it to grand finals with Batgirl
MMH: Only Jupiter has made it to grand finals with MMH
Aquaman: Tom won ECT early on; since May 2013 only Theo has reached grand finals with AM

No other Batgirl, MMH, or Aquaman has even won a yearly regional.

to be fair you have would have compare to two games up to the same date in time. So what happened in MK before evo 2012 for example.

Everyone has been comparing the bigger portion of MK9's lifetime -- so to be fair, they'd have to edit their results as well.

But, you could still name four Kabal players and a couple of Laos who'd won tournaments by the time EVO 2012 rolled around.

You would basically have to compare after the last MK9 patch to EVO 2012 with Injustice's last patch to this EVO.

And I am not going to do that because that still would not prove anything probably.

Well the top tiers of mk didnt change really, igau has and if u count supes and adam when they were top tier many tournaments were won by someone using them. No matter how u put it, u cant justify igau being more balanced than mk9, the discussion wont end.
