General/Other Purple Rain...Purple Rain! - The Rain General Gameplay Discussion Thread

YOMI Reno_Racks

I have a dream...
Some things I noted while dicking around in training mode:

If you add standing 2 after a B2 1+2 starter and go into the normal uppercut combo....and this works for the 12F4 starter as well...you get around 38-40% damage and the uppercut is much easier to do.

For combo enders...I've been toying around with B3. It does close to as much damage as a geyser kick and in scaling, you only lose one or two percent vs. geyser kick, but you keep the opponent close to you, which in some matches may be useful.

What do you guys think? Is standing 2 worth using in combos? It seems to have a pretty big hitbox and seems more damage-scaling friendly.

I'll leave this info for the Rain Makers and let you guys set me straight
Right on man. I started using 2 in both the B2, 1+2 and the 1,2,f4 combos a while back. I was surprised not to see it listed anywhere at the time so I posted it a few months ago. For those that don't know what Rude is talking about he means instead of:

B2,1+2,43xxbubble,uppercut, 43xxlightning,RH,4xxgeyser-40%/43%jip
You do:
B2,1+2 ,dash,2, 43xxbubble,uppercut, 43xxlightning,RH,slight step forward,4xxgeyser-44%/47%jip
And instead of:
1,2,f4, 43xxbubble, uppercut, 43xxlightning, RH, 4xxgeyser-42%/45%jip
You do:
1,2,f4, dash, 2, 43xxbubble, uppercut, 43xxlightning, RH, slight step forward,4xxgeyser-46%/49%jip
I'm with you, an easy extra 4% is essential.

As far as finishing combos with B3 goes, I think it's definitely a good option. It's best to mix up Rain's combo enders as much as possible. B3 does leave the opponent very close and that can be useful midscreen against zoners. However, if you want to be close to your opponent when they're waking up you do have some other options.

4xxgeyser, IAtele- I use this ender more than anything because it gives me max damage, 6% more meter and is safer than 43tele as long as you IATele correctly and right as you land from the geyser. Leaves you right next to the opponent but not with enough time to cross them up safely.

Diagonal JKtele- Smarrgasm showed me this in Atlanta and I must say it's pretty awesome. You sacrifice 5% or so damage but you have so much advantage that you get a free cross up which is just great.

4,3xxsplash- I know this one is widely used but I just figured I would add that it is really useful against characters you want a little distance from like Cage, Liu Kang, Sonya etc.

1,1xxtele- This is another option for teleporting in on your opponent and other than Jktele, it is the safest. I have never been punished using this and you get a little more damage than JKtele so it's worth using.

Once again it's best to mix it up to keep your opponent slightly mind f#cked so use all of them. Good shit though pimp:)

I see that ending a combo with JK xx Teleport has been discussed a bit, but have you guys ever messed with NJP xx Teleport?

It ends in a Splat that leaves them extremely close to you, because they actually roll through you on wakeup. I use it here:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHYEmdnnqEU&t=9m43s

After the knockdown, they roll to your back, which can mess up some people's wakeup inputs. If they start catching on, you can move back slightly, which forces them to roll the other direction, mixing it up even more.

I do it for like 2 months now (don't do JiK yet). I always do NJP + tp. RHcharge + tp, pressure (mostly waterfall).
I have right the time to switch position twice to make a good feint on his wake up (it's a bit like jax' double dash charges while his opponent is on the floor).

okay I know this is pretty bad quality, but here is a ft5 that I used rain for

I kept forgetting which combo starter I had used and used the wrong enders, but I kind of got adjusted by the later parts

Shoot them. Shoot them all.
Legit question: Why do a number of people say that Rain is solid as hell and then you have people like Pig who claim Rain is garbage/bottom 8? I'm leaning towards Rain for my final and 4th character....just curious why he's viewed so "night and day" by players?

What's a Smarrgasm?

Theres probably a couple reasons. There's not too many people who play him (especially at a high level). Some people play characters where rain excels and thus think he is really good and then there are others who body a rain player once and think he is god awful. Some people, like pig have played rain and gotten their own opinion on him. All in all most people have no idea what to think about him thus why in a thread where i ask where he is the answers were all over the place. He is a solid character IMO but if im being honest its hard to excel with him in tournament alone and i know what thats like.

Honestly Chef, that was some of the most sexcellent (and blurry!) Rain play I've seen yet. Awesome Rain you got there. AA 2~Bubble, D1 AA crossups, armored cancels, RH backdash cancel into B2, Deep JK's into 43~Bubble, the whole shebang. Great patience and skill, seriously.

The only criticism (and very minor at that) I'd give is it might be wise to drop the DJK, 43~Tele ender. It only seemed to get you into trouble, even when you didn't drop it. Go for the consistency instead.

Oh an no worries about forgetting which starter you used. Trust me, that happens to ALL Rain players here and there.

haha I really like DJK 43 tele ender, I missed a lot of DJK combos in the corner though, which was again me forgetting which combo I was doing
