===============================================

The side deck is for rematches. You can rematch your opponent, but you cannot change decks. Think of it in a tournament sense. Matches are I believe 2/3, and a side deck provides you the opportunity to switch in cards or swap out cards depending on your opponents deck.

The extra deck is for XYZ, Synchro and Fusion monsters. You guys probably already know about the Fusion monsters, since they were the first and only extra deck monsters you could have. Now there's XYZ's and Synchro cards.

For a Synchro summon, you have to use monster cards who's total level is exactly equal to the level of a Synchro monster that you want to summon. Also, you will need one of the monsters to be a "tuner" monster, which is displayed on the card where it says "Fiend/Tuner" etc. You just have to read what the conditions of the specific Synchro monster are. Some simply require 1 tuner monster and 1 or more non-tuner monsters who's combined level equals the Synchro monsters level.

For example, look at Brionac:

It reads: 1 Tuner + 1 or more non-tuner monsters. So, a level 2 Tuner with a level 4 non-tuner to equal level 6 will be what is required to Synchro summon Brionac. And to do so, you have to have the Tuner and the Non-Tuner on the field, and just send them to the graveyard.

Some Synchro's, however, require additional things not just a tuner and a non-tuner. Some require specific monsters or cards. Some require at least 2 non-tuner monsters with a tuner. It just depends on the card, and the conditions to summon it will be on the text on the card.

XYZ's are a little easier to understand. All you need is 2 or 3 monsters with the same level. Then you overlay them, and Special Summon the XYZ monter on top of the other cards. Some XYZ's require specific types of monsters, however. Such as "2 level 4 warrior type monsters", so pay attention to that.

Synchro Monsters are fundamentally similar to Ritual Monsters - if you control face-up monsters whose levels add up to the level of a Synchro Monster in your Extra Deck, you can send them to the grave to Special Summon that Synchro Monster. The condition is that exactly one of these cards has to be a Tuner Monster - a new sub-category of card, similar to how Union Monsters are a sub-category of Effect Monsters.

For example, if you control a Level 3 Junk Synchron (a Tuner) + a Level 2 Doppelwarrior (who isn't a Tuner), you can send them both to the graveyard to Special Summon Ally of Justice Catastor (a Level 5 Synchro Monster) from your extra deck. Generally, the Synchro monsters are far more powerful than the monsters in your Main Deck, and a lot quicker to summon - Junk Synchron's effect is to special summon a level 2 or lower monster from your grave, so you can summon powerful Synchro monsters with one card, meaning that Tribute Monsters were largely abandoned when Synchro Monsters came out. The other advantage is that since you can never draw a Synchro Monster, you'll never have it sitting around in your hand uselessly - they can never be dead-drawn. Plaguespreader Zombie is the iconic Zombie tuner - not only can it revive itself from the grave, but it can be special summoned by Zombie Master, which allows you to make large amounts of Level 6 Synchro monsters very quickly.

Xyz Monsters are arguably either a lot simpler or a lot more complicated than Synchro Monsters. Any time you have two or more monsters that are exactly the same level, you can stack them on top of each other (called 'overlaying') and place an Xyz Monster who's Rank is the same as the monster's Levels on top of the stack. For example, if you control Zombie Master (a Level 4 monster) and use his effect to summon Goblin Zombie (another Level 4 monster), you can stack them together to summon Number 37: Utopia (a Rank 4 monster that needs two Level 4 monsters to summon). Once you've overlayed into an Xyz Monster, the cards that you used to summon it effectively become counters - the Xyz Monster will send them to the grave to activate their effect. They don't count as monsters, and they don't count as on the field - they're more like ammunition for the monster's effects.

Yeah, who actually buys the cards any more? I think I only bought a starter deck back in 2002 and that was it. I will get the title changed to Dueling Network so people don't get confused with actually playing it in person.

Man, there's a bunch of broken new cards and decks people use nowadays that wasn't around back then during the OG time. I don't use any of the new cards because I don't feel like learning everything. I may make a better deck when I get some free time. I use mostly OG cards with a couple new ones, nothing fancy.

yu-gi-oh is still quite popular, it has an active tourney scene although all the new deck formats are more broken than kabal
