I posted a review of the Hit Box today, figured you guys might be interested in it. I threw in a 15+ min video showing how I use it to play Mortal Kombat 9. I think it's worth watching :p

Excellent review. As a player with no arcade stick experience but plenty of keyboard experience, the HitBox is really intriguing. The price is too steep, but I'm considering making my own somehow.

I'm on the waiting list for the 360 version. I absolutely can't wait to bust it out. Being a Kano player I'm looking forward to reliable Air Ball commands. My only concern in Block button placement. I've been trying to figure out a good button to map Block to, but nothing seems ideal so far. Right now I'm thinking, since my left thumb will control jump, that I could do the middle 4 buttons as my 1, 2, 3, and 4, have the lower left button (the one to the right of the jump button) be Block, and the upper left button be Tag so that it won't do anything if I hit it by accident. That way I can control block with my right thumb and still X-Ray by hitting the 3 bottom left buttons. Any suggestions?

Oh, and very nice review, Delriach! You raped that dude with Sindel! I was hoping to see some Kano use since he has very unique direction inputs for his moves (F, D, B, F) but overall it was a very informative and concise review! Thanks!

I didn't think you could remap directional buttons. Even so, the placement of the Jump buttons seems pretty solid.

That's actually the first layout I used. I couldn't get used to it. That's when it was recommended to me that I use my right thumb to control jump. And then that's when I started using the MK button layout.

It really depends on what you're most comfortable with. You won't know until you try it for yourself and see what works best.

Mesk, what board did your friend use for the PCB? I've got alll the panels ready and was going to use a PS2 controller, but don't know if the Left and Right will cancel each other out and form a neutral, or it will do double blocking....

How much did it cost you and how long did it take to make ? I'm thinking of making one since the 'official' one costs $180, but I'm a complete noob when it comes to woodwork, wiring and soldering.

$40 for happ competition buttons, $30 for a madcatz WWE pad i used the guts for. Used cat5 cable for the wiring. I had a bud that works at an arcade help me with the soldering but I could probably do it myself now, seemed pretty simple.

The wood box was a spare sheet of maple my dad had. table saw, a few screws and a 1 1/8" drill bit. not to hard.

It only works on 360 currently tho. Next time a tournament rolls around I'll mod for PS3

Very nice image sir!!! I'm actually making my own too! How far are you drilling the holes apart from each other and how big are you making those holes for the 24 mm buttons and the 30 mm button??

I'm at the stage now where I've got to map out my buttons, but don't know the measurements on where to place the buttons like on the hitbox.

Thanks man and great stuff!!!

Edit: My hitbox top is about 13.9 inches x 7 inches. It was 14" x 7", but I screwed up when I went to use the jigsaw, so I took the parts round to a timer merchant who cut it alll for me!

At the moment, I have all the parts cut, but need to map out the buttings, because I have no idea on where to place them and I dont want to drill holes too big or in the wrong place.

After that, I'll spray the wood black, print out my graphics, prepare the perspex and then put it all together.

I'll post a photo soon.

They are all 30mm buttons, because the only 24's I could find required a more expensive top, and I wanted to keep costs down in case I hated using the thing. For spacing I just sat in a chair, put the thing on my lap, and rested my hands on it, then marked where my fingers were with a pencil and used that as a guide for button placement. You will notice I moved the thumb button up after using it for a while.

I'm still wondering if 24mm buttons would be better or is this fine etc, but overall I like it. I switched back to a pad for a few minutes the other day, jumped when I was trying to dash twice, and went right back to my hitbox :p

Glad I'm not the only one working on this.

I've been having the same question. Is 30mm TOO big? I'd like to go with the official hitbox setups...but messing around with the layout seems fun.

What do you guys say?Go for 30mm and finish it asap?Or wait for 24mm a few weeks?

Too big depends on the size of your fingers and the size of your hands. It's really a personal choice. I hate to state the obvious but why not just order up some 30mm and some 24mm and see the difference for yourself? The buttons are pretty cheap.

Also an FYI if you're trying to do this on the cheap and may or may not have the tools. You might (probably actually) be able to just buy a custom top for an existing stick and go with that.

I got my TE replacement panels from him, good work, and IIRC he will cut custom panels if you want them.

Esku, I'd wait and go for the 24mm buttons if you want closer to the original Hitbox layout. I'm ordering the 24mm buttons in a week or two. I have a photoshop layout of the Hitbox controller if anyone is interested (Send us a PM if you want too). It's in a *.PSD format though, so make sure that you have Photoshop handy. The template I got is to scale, but can't remember who posted the link, but I definitely give him all the plaudits for getting this.

Basically, you can create your own graphic on a layer and then on the buttons layer, mess around by filling in the buttons with different colours to see which designs you like.

I've got the wood panels cut out. Will try to have some photos of the w.i.p soon!!!

can you take a picture of your wiring? like, do the wires just plug into the buttons or do you solder them onto the tab things? and do you wire each button to ground?
Id love to see that too. Im dying to have/make one but im a beginner at making controllers. any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

I'd say my hands are average. I can't really tell 'cause I don't know how to measure hands lol. Guess I'll just have to try for myself.

Problem for me is that I live in Peru, so I have to wait around 2-4 weeks for the set of buttons to arrive, costing me about 15$ each package shipping. (IL/Sanwa buttons are around 2.5$, so I'd need around 41$ for the 24mm ones, including shipping). I can find, however, the 30mm buttons here, so no shipping is required. They cost about 3$ but I don't have to wait at all.

Hmmm...decisions...decisions! Thank you all. Let's see some progress.

I've found this link guys and basically gives you the dimensions for some of the layouts of arcade sticks and buttons..... Some range from the Standard days of Street Fighter up to the present day with buttons being in an arc etc......

All measurements are here.... Hope this helps you guys out!!!
